Even if you reinstall windows more then likely the virus will still be there (if it was a well written virus)

You would have to format your harddrive and then reinstall.

Do you know the name of the virus?? If so there is probably a procedure to remove it.

if you cant find the name and procedure for getting rid of that virus just reinstall windows and make sure you reformat the hard drive and i wouldnt back up any files before you reinstall because they may be contaminated

What I did is burned everything off of the HD that I wanted to save (pics and such) then formated my hard drive, reinstalled windows and installed McAfee before anything else. Then pop in the disc and scan the drive for viruses. This way you don't lose any files unless they are infected. It worked well for me, just make sure you have the current .dat files.

If you ever backed up your registry you could reinstall it. Does it just affect your shortcuts or even when you go to the actual folder where the program is. Try finding the actual .exe file for the program you want to run and see what happens.
