Where in Iowa? It's about 1150 miles from Ames, IA to Lake Hiawatha, NJ. I can't remember how long it took me to drive out last time, but probably around 18 hours.

dubuque

mapquest told us it's 16 hours and 955 miles to dubuque, but whenever mapquest tells me a time it winds up either being way over or way under.

mainly interested in an amount of time dont care about actual mileage

It's about 14 hours - I know you pass through Michigan.. but I'm not sure of the other states, Ican't remember them atm.

I don't go through Michigan. From NJ I'd just hop on 80 and go through PA, OH, IN, IL, and then IA. Dubuque is in the northeast corner of Iowa, so it's closer than here.
