I guess my question is, can the broadband work for any phone jack in the house, or do I have to use some sort of wireless router setup?

So the new TiVo uses a phone line, which we currently (and temporarily) have stretching across the room to the closest phone jack. We have broadband (that's the one that uses a phone line, right?) in our home office for the computer. Is there a way for the tivo to use the broadband rather than the phone line? It's either going to be some wireless setup, or I'm going to have to string phone cord around the room along the baseboard (which isn't that big a deal, just need to buy a long cord).

And since the Tivo is right next to the PS2, is there something I can use to have the tivo and the ps2 connected to the broadband without having the cord running across the room?

broadband is not the same plug as phone.

you can however get a wireless set up for your PS2, dont know if you can run the tivo off the internet, I would just run a new phone jack around the outside of the house for the tivo rather then the wire across the room.

You supposedly can run the Tivo using internet. They say if you use the phone jack, the tivo will automatically hang up when you get or make a call. I just don't like the idea, and it takes it longer for the crap to load using the phone line. I don't mind running a cord because there's already speaker wire on the base board for the surround sound, the phone cord would follow the same path. I would just prefer to use the quicker internet setup, rather than the phone line.

I guess I'll see about setting up the wireless stuff for the tivo and ps2, just need to figure out what I need to buy.

I have Tivo and havent bothered, it makes its phone call something like 2am on mondays, dont even know its there. I also ran a phone jack right behind the wall unit up from the basement.

your going to need 2 wireless cards and a router unless sony sells a wireless doohickey for the PS2, dont know if that will work for the tivo though. So anywhere from $100-$200 worth of hardware.

I think we already have the router, for my brother's laptop. I might get the wireless card for the ps2, but I guess I'll hold off on one for the tivo unless I see a good deal or something.

What sucks with this house is there's no basement, and there's no attic. If we want to add jacks, it's either going to require a lot of fishing in the walls, or some ugly holes drilled in walls or floors.

If the tivo call never interferes, I guess I'll just string another wire around the room, there's a bunch of furniture and a wood-burning stove so you can't see the wires unless you look for them.

Now to figure out this problem.

Swap wires and see what happens, check connections especially if you made them yourself. You can set Tivo to make its phone call at any time or day you want.

I got my cards and router from Comp Usa on sale , after rebates the cards were $20, otherwise I think they were $60?

just remember to mail out the rebates.

Cool, I'll have to check that out. At radio shack yesterday they were $50 or $60 for the card.

i dont think tivo can use the internet. from what i have heard it dials an acutal number and uploads a list over the phone. you can do this manualy evey week or so and be fine. or jsut leave it plugged in and it auto does it. and also internet and phone use different jacks. though they may look the same a phone jack wont just plug into a wireless internet router because broadband uses ethernet cables and such.

Sounds good, I'll look into the wireless thing for the PS2.

here are a few.

This one I think is if you don't already have a wireless router set up

This one is if you already have one set up. it reads the signal.

Just to give you an idea. There are probably alot more available out there.
