PORT SALERNO — Members of the Martin County Fire Rescue Hazmat team responded to a fuel clean-up Tuesday morning after a boater pumped gasoline into his fishing rod holder instead of his gas tank.
The boater pumped about 100 gallons of gasoline at the Finest Kind Marina fuel dock before he noticed the problem, but only about 15 gallons polluted the water, marina employees said.
The rest of the gasoline seeped into the boat’s bilge tank, witnesses said.
The man’s fishing boat was towed from the fuel dock to Sandsprit Park so Hazmat officials could secure the fuel, said Jeff Alter, Fire Rescue bureau chief.
Marina employees said it’s not uncommon to see boaters pump fuel into fishing rod holders because the holder is often close to the fuel tank hole.

I'm guess the diesel was pumped into the gunnel then into the belly of the boat and pumped out by the bilge LOL, I doubt he'll ever get the gas smell out of his boat, but I'd say he's damn lucky he didn't blow himself up, moron. of course he was drinking, most people can't imagine operating a boat any other way, prolly had a smoke hanging from his lips too.

I swear half the fun of boating is watching the people at the boat launch.
Just because you have a 40k truck and a 50k water ski boat dosent mean you know how to back the boat in or even how to opperate them together.

Hahahaha, my dad did the same thing! (24' Sportfish, I think)
Though it was regular gas, and wasn't nearly as much. He was watching the fuel overflow tube, and realized nothing was coming out when it should have (tank was already half full).
He just turned on the bilge pump on the way to the boat ramp, let the gas spill onto the road.
Now every time he fills up we're sure to remind him.

Yea but did he pump 100 gallons? I mean seriously that's $500 of head up your *** LOL
Yea I love watching the boat launch, but certainly don't miss having to use it Now we have a private boat launch at the marina so launching the dinghy is too easy

I think he pumped around $50 bucks worth, and that was 2 years ago. Not sure how much.
If my dad ever got rid of his boat, I think I would still go to the public ramp with a lawn chair and some beer on July 4th weekend, just to watch the insanity. Luckily pops can launch his boat in about 1.5 minutes if he's got another person.
