So a good while back while i was searching for a job i did a lot of applying online. So yesterday i get a letter in mail stating that all my personal info was stolen from my doing so. Cliff notes of the letter is that the 3rd party company that was hired to look over the apps had 2 laptops stolen which held all the information. The files were left unencrypted, and that they believe it was just a theft and not done with the intention of getting the information. Now looking at the letter i almost want to call it a fake. But that would still mean somehow someone has my info. So lets say it is real.. The place i applied admits the 3rd party company by not encrypting the data breached the agreement made when i consented to apply. So would that alone be enough for me to take action against them? I'm not one of those sue happy people so i dont know all the ins and outs but given what was put at risk i feel something should be done?

What loss do you intend to claim? Seems to me you haven't lost anything.

This sort of thing happens all the time. I think they are legally obligated to notify you when it happens, which it seems they have done.

yea they fulfilled their legal obligation.

if they didnt tell you the info was stolen, and then your identity was stolen and you traced it back to them, then youd have legal grounds.
