dude, windfall; In modern times, the term has come to be associated with finances, referring to an unexpected increase or surplus (e.g., a "windfall profit") and it has become disassociated from its original agricultural meaning.



Quite literally windfall refers to fruit and nuts that are removed from the tree by nature - a strong wind blows them to the ground, where they can be easily harvested if discovered before they become overripe or insect-infested.
