apparently these are sort of misleadingly named. the emergency is NOT if you need to stop the car. apparently that lever is there in case you need to quickly make a burning brake smell inside the car.

A long time ago, I remember that at speed in my RX-2, a hard pull on the ebrake lever produced a barely perceptible drag. I remember being amazed riding in a friends car (might have been a VW Rabbit. That's right, not Golf, Rabbit) and he could actually lock up the rears using the ebrake. Wowzie! What fun!
