I think they're a good alternative to a treadmill, if you have rough knees or don't want the impact of running. I don't like them because the weight never leaves my feet, which causes my feet to hurt really bad after a while (flat footed).
If you working out, worry about what your body looks like afterward, not what you look like during.
Hell, if you're doing squats, you have to jut your *** out like a bitch in heat, unless you want to hurt your back.
I've got the same problem, I don't have good running form and stomp along, beating up my knees and shins.
The last few months on the stairclimber nearly every day has got me carrying my weight on my toes more, try getting up on your toes more on the elliptical machine. My knees feel funny on the elliptical if I stay flat footed, almost over-extended, but much better if I stay on my toes.

There's also this machine, like a mix between an elliptical and the motion of a stair climber. My wife likes it a lot, supposed to be good to help out shin splints. I think it's called Arc Trainer at our gym.
