Calling all experienced Linux nerds:
I have two HDDs. XP is on one and I'm going to install RH 8.0 on the other, momentarily; however, I want to know how I can dual boot. All the tutorials I've read are for OSes installed on the same HDD, but that's not the case with me. Any advice? |
I didn't think you could do that because of the fact that one hard drive has to be the master and the other the slave. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif
|
same procedure whether they are on the same drive or not.
Master and slave has nothing to do with the OS it is only a way of identifying 2 different drive on the controller. |
Phins didn't you say someting about Grub awhile back...to use that as the boot loader?
|
Yea you have to install Windows first, then Linux, Grub will be your bootloader it will let you select from windoze or Linux.
If you mess anything up and can't boot to windoze, just put the win disk in and select repair, no worries. |

Naw all you can do is hose the boot manager, which can easily be fixed from the windows install disc, no worries.
|
Okay, I'll finish watching Frailty and then I'm goin for it...
|
What version of Grub do you use/recommend?
|
The latest one with RH 9.0
|
So it comes with Red Hat? The only thing is I'm installing 8.0...because from what I understand 9.0 is like a beta...
That's what I've been told... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif |
9 is not a beta
It comes with 8 as well |
Alrighty, I'll let you know how it goes...
|
Thats what i did, windows on one hdd, linux on the other and grub as a bootloader.
Altho my internet doesnt wanna work on linux so its a tad bit useless... |
Okay, not going so smoothly...Grub will not boot to XP (even though I told it where XP was) and Linux has some sort of error when it boots up...hold for error...
|
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1 I forgot to mention that my drive is SATA... |
Linux error:
I cannot start the X Server.... I can't read any of the options, I assume one is yes and one is no, to view the "server output." |
Hell yes I fixed the Linux problem...now what about XP?
|
Ummm...I never made an automated recovery floppy disk...
|
Why would you need one?
You use the repair feature on the windows xp install cd. |
I'm about to go insane.
Repair feature? This option escapes me... |
On your windows xp installation cd...
|
You see, when I select that partition (my serial ata hard drive, the one that has XP) it says in order to install XP on this hard drive, setup will have to write some startup files to my Linux hard drive....to continue, create an NTFS partition on my Linux hard drive...
|
Your not trying to install windows xp again theres a repair thing on the cd.
|
I just unplugged the Linux hard drive and it booted fine.
|
That works too.
I cant do that because my bootloader is on the hdd with linux.... |
So how can I get Grub to work now...? I think the whole thing about XP being on the SATA drive screwed stuff up.
|
Or...just when I want to use Linux I put in the boot disk, but I don't know how to change my current config to get rid of Grub.
|
Meh, like phins said, the repair option on your xp instal cd should get rid of grub and have it boot straight to xp.
|
I did repair, but Grub still loads when both HDD are connected.
|
hrm
Odd. |
Anyone else have any ideas?
I'm stumped. |
RAID that ****.....j/k
|
Hmmm...Raid with two different sized hard drives...that could be fun. LOL.
I still need help though. Anybody? |
