Calling all experienced Linux nerds:

I have two HDDs. XP is on one and I'm going to install RH 8.0 on the other, momentarily; however, I want to know how I can dual boot. All the tutorials I've read are for OSes installed on the same HDD, but that's not the case with me.

Any advice?

WishIhadaRX7 08-13-2003 11:29 AM

I didn't think you could do that because of the fact that one hard drive has to be the master and the other the slave. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif

phinsup 08-13-2003 12:55 PM

same procedure whether they are on the same drive or not.

Master and slave has nothing to do with the OS it is only a way of identifying 2 different drive on the controller.

Phins didn't you say someting about Grub awhile back...to use that as the boot loader?

phinsup 08-13-2003 01:03 PM

Yea you have to install Windows first, then Linux, Grub will be your bootloader it will let you select from windoze or Linux.

If you mess anything up and can't boot to windoze, just put the win disk in and select repair, no worries.

****, I'm so worried I'm going to screw my Windows installation up...

phinsup 08-13-2003 01:11 PM

Naw all you can do is hose the boot manager, which can easily be fixed from the windows install disc, no worries.

Dysfnctnl85 08-13-2003 01:11 PM

Okay, I'll finish watching Frailty and then I'm goin for it...

Dysfnctnl85 08-13-2003 01:12 PM

What version of Grub do you use/recommend?

phinsup 08-13-2003 01:15 PM

The latest one with RH 9.0

Dysfnctnl85 08-13-2003 01:37 PM

So it comes with Red Hat? The only thing is I'm installing 8.0...because from what I understand 9.0 is like a beta...

That's what I've been told... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif

phinsup 08-13-2003 01:38 PM

9 is not a beta

It comes with 8 as well

Dysfnctnl85 08-13-2003 01:47 PM

Alrighty, I'll let you know how it goes...

Leetheslacker 08-13-2003 01:57 PM

Thats what i did, windows on one hdd, linux on the other and grub as a bootloader.

Altho my internet doesnt wanna work on linux so its a tad bit useless...

Dysfnctnl85 08-13-2003 02:21 PM

Okay, not going so smoothly...Grub will not boot to XP (even though I told it where XP was) and Linux has some sort of error when it boots up...hold for error...

Dysfnctnl85 08-13-2003 02:22 PM

rootnoverify (hd0,0)

chainloader +1

I forgot to mention that my drive is SATA...

Dysfnctnl85 08-13-2003 02:24 PM

Linux error:

I cannot start the X Server....

I can't read any of the options, I assume one is yes and one is no, to view the "server output."

Dysfnctnl85 08-13-2003 02:27 PM

Hell yes I fixed the Linux problem...now what about XP?

Dysfnctnl85 08-13-2003 02:57 PM

Ummm...I never made an automated recovery floppy disk...

Leetheslacker 08-13-2003 03:11 PM

Why would you need one?

You use the repair feature on the windows xp install cd.

Dysfnctnl85 08-13-2003 03:19 PM

I'm about to go insane.

Repair feature? This option escapes me...

Leetheslacker 08-13-2003 03:26 PM

On your windows xp installation cd...

Dysfnctnl85 08-13-2003 03:26 PM

You see, when I select that partition (my serial ata hard drive, the one that has XP) it says in order to install XP on this hard drive, setup will have to write some startup files to my Linux hard drive....to continue, create an NTFS partition on my Linux hard drive...

Leetheslacker 08-13-2003 03:27 PM

Your not trying to install windows xp again theres a repair thing on the cd.

Dysfnctnl85 08-13-2003 03:45 PM

I just unplugged the Linux hard drive and it booted fine.

Leetheslacker 08-13-2003 03:46 PM

That works too.

I cant do that because my bootloader is on the hdd with linux....

Dysfnctnl85 08-13-2003 04:11 PM

So how can I get Grub to work now...? I think the whole thing about XP being on the SATA drive screwed stuff up.

Dysfnctnl85 08-13-2003 04:12 PM

Or...just when I want to use Linux I put in the boot disk, but I don't know how to change my current config to get rid of Grub.

Leetheslacker 08-13-2003 04:31 PM

Meh, like phins said, the repair option on your xp instal cd should get rid of grub and have it boot straight to xp.

Dysfnctnl85 08-13-2003 04:58 PM

I did repair, but Grub still loads when both HDD are connected.

Leetheslacker 08-13-2003 09:17 PM

hrm

Odd.

Dysfnctnl85 08-13-2003 09:41 PM

Anyone else have any ideas?

I'm stumped.

wraith 08-13-2003 10:02 PM

RAID that ****.....j/k

Dysfnctnl85 08-14-2003 12:42 PM

Hmmm...Raid with two different sized hard drives...that could be fun. LOL.

I still need help though.

Anybody?
