[quote name='Shane.Trammell' date='Jun 13 2005, 11:50 AM']its not illegal to use the work if you have the © on it and his name. that way youre not claiming it as your own design. also, youre not making any profit off of it so its not like youre using his invention to make money.

im gonna guess that matt groening wouldnt care unless you were making some good profits that he could get a piece of

Exactly my point. Why would he care if we made 12 shirts as a prank over some stupid internet car sites? David and I figured these guys would be the type to make an issue over copyrights. I'm sure these guys download music off kazaa, napster, ect... Hypocrits, gotta love em!

That's totally incorrect, you cannot use copyritten/trademarked material without the written consent of the copyright owner. Profit or intent doesn't matter.

It would be unlikely that Fox would give a crap, but none the less it's illegal use of the copyright.

The law says nothing about intent, like any law. If you use it without written consent from the owner you are in violation of the copyright law.

Wow...Listen to all this...We are all talking about laws and ownership (whether you are for or against the cause) like everyone one of us don't have at least 10 illegaly downloaded albums less than 3ft away from the fingers we are typing with

Speaking of that. I am thinking of opening up my FTP media server again.

Not EVERYONE... you will find a CD on the shelf for EVERY song I have in my wma collection. Argue how you will, but I enjoy my music and I don't mind throwing my wad at something that I enjoy listening too. That said, I don't care what others do. None the less, "everyone does it" is not a legal defense. 20 people jaywalk and you get a ticket the judge is going to laugh you out of court when you explain to him that everyone else did.... did you? Yes, then you are guilty of jaywalking.

That said, I highly doubt the trademark owner is going to sue you over 15 t-shirts.

Calvin is pissing on various things all over the internet and it doesnt seem to be an issue.

i dont think so, its like citing a source in a paper, as long as you say who actually came up with it youre ok. books are copywritten and its not illegal to quote them as long as its cited.

While I am a moderator on the 8 forum, I don't personally give enough of a **** to care one way or another and as such you won't see any warnings or bannings from me. I think it's fun to watch if anything. This is personal between you guys and killjoy as hugely childish and immature as it all is. I will say though that if you guys are wondering why the others keep banning you and you can't figure out what you're doing wrong over there, everyone is watching this thread here too. They don't care if you are talking bad about them there or here. They don't really care at all and are actually just being entertained by you guys so don't think you are really pissing them off. You're not. Killjoy actually thought the shirts were funny but he won't publicly admit it. He knows good and well that if he were ever on the Simpsons that that's the character he'd be. That was the funny thing about it. In an attempt to insult him, you guys actually found the cartoon him and got it right! Then you quoted the law! He gets more joy from letting you guys think you are pissing him off. The reality is that only you guys are mad about it all. I just sit back and read both sides. It's kind of like watching an episode of Springer. Find Simpsons characters for everyone and make shirts for all of us! Why should only 1 mod have all the fun?

You need to look into trademarking and copyrighting a bit, it's NOT like sigthing a source in a school paper.

Look at it this way.... You start building cars and selling them and you decide you really like the logo and name Ford. So you take the blue emblem and throw it on your car BUT by your logic, if you put the TM or the C it's legal LOL

When you make a school paper you are not marketing, selling or MODIFYING the work, you are quoting a written source. You are talking about modifying an artists work/graphic in order to produce a product, profit or not it's in violation of the copyright.

Where's my shirt? It needs a really arrogant self centered caption above it! I don't know who I look like from the Simpsons though. I guess if Ray Romano were ever on the Simpsons (he probably was at some point), that would be me.
