Balding is what is known as an "X" chromosome trait. Males give the Y chromosome to their sons, thus they cannot give their balding gene to their sons. The way balding is obtained is through their mothers. If their father (your grandpa on your mom's side) has it, then chances are you have a 50% chance of getting it if your mom isn't balding. If your mom IS balding, when then you're screwed because females start balding if both of their X cromosomes are balding genes.
