It's an engineering marvel, but it's still cold and boring. Every time I see the things (a shop I visit frequently has one), it doesn't do it for me. The pseudo-canards, the boxy shape, they just seem sedated (to be distinguished from tastefully understated). But honestly I've never found skylines to be particularly interesting out of the box. They're more like blank canvases until someone puts their own passion and energy into them.

On the rx-8 side of things, it is certainly time for the new RX-7 with some really interesting technology packed in.

You couldn't have taken my words further out of context. I never said every car has to be a sportscar. No one needs a Pininfarina-designed Yaris with 500bhp. But if you're going to build a sports car, build it right. There's a reason manufacturers build halo cars. It's to show what their made of, to show they aren't just robotic entities that coldly pump out cars for varying market segments. Frankly, that's why I like rotaries. It's not the most cost-effective car to produce or run, and it's certainly not perfect. But it's unique and made with passion, which is far more interesting and endearing.

If you're not out there buying a new car that's built with passion, you're the reason they're not making them. Don't expect a company to make a profit-free product just so you can drool over a magazine and spend your money somewhere else.

Problem is a lot of us can't AFFORD the cars we lust for.

I'd give my left nut for a new Mustang Cobra or Ford GT, Challenger SRT-8, Corvette ZR1, Nisaan GTR... the list goes on and on...

However I think actually trading a ******** for one is more likely than me ever being able to actually afford one (new anyway).

We need more passion-fueled entry-level cars. Something under $20k, forced induction, RWD or AWD. It could be done.

Well given that I just finished 3 years of full-time university and am now unemployed, I don't think I'm the target buyer for new cars. Maybe when my apprenticeship starts

they do target these cars a lot more specifically than you'd think was sane. the cx9 is supposed to appeal to 45-55 year old married couples with a dog.

The boxy-ish design threw me off too...but the aerodynamic properties of the car is one of its interesting strongpoints...its a box...but every nook and cranny is either geared toward pushing it to the ground or directing air towards the rear spoiler to further push it down on the pavement...it's hard to find a japanese car that wasnt just designed so it can fit a set of tires under it.

It is just a tougher time to be passionate about things.. BTW Corvettes are pretty damn neat under all the not too exotic looking bodywork. Either way I like how the car companies are goin retro now.. Although the cars of old were not the best they still look damn hot.. they represent a different time, despite the badmouthing they get now, even in this thread. Simple they may be, by today's terms, but they were all the hype back in the days.. Every generation has cars they loved, and within those choices some would narrow them down and talk bad about the other choices. Opinions come and go as do styles, but a fast car or a fun car will always be just that. As long as you experienced it the memory will always warm your heart.

Sometimes a car's potential is not discovered till it trickles down to a different market, as some of you mentioned. Some cars now out of reach will be the future's bang for the buck drifter/auto X'er etc.. The worlds population increasing also makes other features more important, and at the same time makes those who require certain things harder to please. The best way to do something is to do it yourself, unless you have the funds to get it done right. Thats how the companies we have now came to be. And that is what has fueled soo many businesses and enthusiasts. Think of all the different magazines on the newstands now, so many different choices. These are all a direct consequence of how cars affect our lives. They have Yaris' with body kits for cryin out loud.. That may make you cringe but someone out there is saving a bit from every paycheck because thats his goal. The individuality put into every person's car displays the passion that nowadays the automakers lack to put in them.

Take my damn response for example, I was reading a damn thread a forum about rotaries while eating cheetos, and suddenly I decided to write in this thread. All a consequence of the last 20 years of my life, the very time when the world was changing and creating a whole new breed of enthusiasts. They car companies will hear you, but they will not do for you unless they can stay on the plus side usually. Times have changed, but they have paved new roads for many. Instead of complaining about the cars coming out now, modify them or better yet create a product to address issues you feel are inadequate and if others like you agree they will gladly support your efforts. This is the only way to move on from now on, and it is the only way to make the manufacturers step it up and try harder. When they see someone else create a profitable winning combination they tend to emulate it. Then they throw some money at the idea and try to develop the next "cool" thing... That last step is crucial because that is where they employ the new blood, young and old with fresh ideas and full of PASSION!!

Damn that was real true and well put.

One more thing to add to that- a car enthusiast is a car enthusiast. Like me, I can appreciate ANYONE's ride, for the work and time, and money spent on it. Lowrider, ricer, tuner, muscle car, sports car... there's a lot of heart behind that car. And that's the truth. Just because they choose a Mustang or Camaro or a Civic or a Road Runner, or a truck or SUV, or an Impala on switches, a '51 Merc, whatever... we all have different taste, but the heart is there regardless. We're ALL auto enthusiasts.

My 7 is the biggest project I've ever undertaken. It was my first engine pull, my first rotary car, my first RUNNING and DRIVING project car in 10 years! And I know it's not anything too special yet, but I love that car. It puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. So it may be ugly, may be slow... but that's my baby.

As car enthusiasts we need to work together to benefit the community, the future of car enthusasts- not seperate ourselves into groups based on Make, Model and Engine type. If this is where we are now, imagine the hobby in 10, 20, 30 years. The technology... christ in 20 years our cars will all be CLASSICS, even the 3rd Gens!

I'm really stoned right now, and I would probably continue typing this all day. This **** is straight from the heart. So take it.
