Driving back from Saturdays Mazda Rev it up I was on a 2 lane road through the middle of Florida. I was just leaving Arcadia and heading towards Oceechobee, this is a 65 mile run through nothing. Its perfectly straight roads with nothing on them.

All of the sudden I see something way off in the distance. As I roll up I see it a bunch of cones in the road with about 10 State Troopers parked on either side of the road.

One is standing in the middle of the road, he points at me and points to the side of the road.

Me: Whats going on?

Cop: Do you know how fast you were going?

Me: No...

Cop: A plane clocked you at 76 in a 60. Did you know you were going that fast?

Me: No, I was just cruising along eating french fries and drinking this here coke.

Cop: License and Registration...

Nice....

There were about 7 cars pulled over everyhting from SUV's to Toyota Camrys with old ladies at the wheel.

There is no way in hell you can go 60 on that deserted road these guys are just trying to boost revinue.

"Protect and Serve" isnt that the police motto. What were they protecting the general public from?? Maybe they were trying to protect a stray racoon that might wander into the road.

Well, I am getting one of those ticket defense lawyers to fight this. I purposefully never admitted anything to the cop. I was also very nice to him so he would not remember me. Time to take this one to court and beat it.

If I was speeding on a busy road being a menace I would just take it like a man and pay the ticket. Setting up shop in the middle of BFE is total bullshit.

banzaitoyota 06-22-2004 06:24 AM

Bummer :(

Dakmis 06-22-2004 06:24 AM

I am calling this place today. My ticket is for $119 but I will be damned if I am paying it. I would rather pay an attorney to stick this ticket up their ass.

I also reported the area as a speed trap on that website.

phinsup 06-22-2004 07:16 AM

i always opt for a lawyer, my last tickets was $80, I paid a lawyer $250 to make it go away.

Why? 1, it's off my record 2, the more people who fight them, the less likely the are to hand out bogus tickets and trust me they hand out a lot of them.

Baldy 06-22-2004 08:52 AM

Wow, that sucks. I could understand if you were breezing along at 90 mph, but only 16 over on a deserted road? WTF?

mmm....french fries...

BrandonDrecksage 06-22-2004 09:02 AM

damn..i guess they have nothing better to do....jim...maybe you should move to NJ...I think there are to many trees on the parkway to use planes to clock us https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

what?...i've bought all of my cars....but I was just asking cause the rx7 is a lil more high profile...and i'd be shocked to hear he was only going 76 in it

and my mom is dead *******

defprun 06-22-2004 09:19 AM

Aircraft patrolled sections of highway are common over here...

I just ignore them https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

defprun 06-22-2004 09:20 AM

Jesus Christ its CANADA like we can afford things like PLANES! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...>/rolleyes.gif

Jims5543 06-22-2004 09:29 AM

I was in the Mini which I would imagine stands out a bit more than the RX-7 from an planes point of view.

I just got off the phone w/ the attorneys office. They will not gurantee a win. They guarantee wins in Miami, West Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale, Port St. Lucie, Stuart but the area I was in, Desoto County they will not guarantee a win. It seems the Judges are biased and dont dismiss too many tickets. I am still trying though its worth it to me to try to beat this or at the least exploit the court system and police to show their corruption.

defprun 06-22-2004 09:31 AM

Winning as in not having to pay or winning as in completely dismissing the ticket?

Jims5543 06-22-2004 09:39 AM

Winning = no fine ticket dismissed

What might happen? I am found guilty have to pay attorney $250 pay ticket $119 pay court charges of up to $500 and get points froim ticket and go to traffic school.

defprun 06-22-2004 09:50 AM

Sounds like fun!

PrincipleOfEvil 06-22-2004 09:54 AM

That hella sucks yo. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/ohmy.png

j9fd3s 06-22-2004 10:29 AM

that sucks! pure revenue generation!

TYSON 06-22-2004 10:42 AM

I concur, but wouldn't having the plane up and 10 cruisers cost them more money than they bring in from tickets?

defprun 06-22-2004 10:43 AM

It's the PHEAR that's worth the extra expense?

good point, but maybe they dont look at it that way. i mean they get like x dollars a year, right?

j9fd3s 06-22-2004 10:46 AM

oh and defprun, if they tried to pace your yetta with a plane it would fall out of the sky!

yeah that's what we were just talking about, maybe they need some funds for the new branch of the courthouse, or money for cops to have overtime.

Entrapment is hardley the way to make money tho. It's just shitty what the police have come to these days.

Now i have a car that means a lot to me, does everything i want it to do, I have a blast in it. But if I enjoy it on anything other than a closed race track, I'll get arrested and my car impounded.

**** makes you want to buy a corrolla.

Jims5543 06-22-2004 11:14 AM

mY TICKET WAS $119 I was doing 76 in a 60 I was going slow for that road. Most poeple are doing 85 + that would cost $169. How many cars do they need to pull over to make it cost effective.

Lets say the average ticket was 100 bucks. I had 7 other cars pulled over with me. That was $700 in about 15 minutes. Figure they pull over about 20 cars an hour and they were there for about 6 hours. (I saw them setting up at 9:00 in the morning) Thats about $12,000 not too shabby for 6 hours work and trust me that is a low estimate. I am sure most people do 80 plus on that road. I would have been if I had not been eating.

TYSON 06-22-2004 11:49 AM

Shoulda demanded to see the radar gun! LOL

they should bring in thousands, because it would cost them many thousands to do such an elaborate setup.

Especially when one or two cruisers would slow every one down just the same.

A sign that says "This road patrolled AT ALL TIMES" and one cruiser would be enough to slow down 90% of drivers to damn close to the speed limit.

twstdmtl 06-22-2004 12:08 PM

All about revenue ehh? Lets do the math shall we...

Lets say troopers make approx. $36K a year

$36,000 / 52 weeks = $692.31 weekly salary

$692.31 / 40 hours = $17.31 hourly

8 troopers for an 8 hour shift cost $1107.84 in labor

Fleet fuel and vehicle maintenance costs...

$40 dollars in fuel per cruiser for 250 miles (V8s and lots of idle time)

.25cents per mile in maintenance (very conservative estimate)

so 250 miles would be $62.5 per cruiser

8 cruisers would be $820.00 worth of fuel and maintenace

The plane would prolly cost $400.00 or more a shift to fly when you think about aviation fuel, pilot salary, plane depreciation and maintenance.

Clerk salary to process the tickets lets say 40 man hours at $9.00 an hour... $360.00

Court personnel salaries for those who do contest the tickets... 8 hours at various pay rates...

Prosecution $192

Public defender $192

Bailiff $96

Judge $248

Stenographer $72

Clerk $72

For a grand total of... $3559.84

They would have to give everyone a ticket in order for this to work if the road is as vacant as described...

yes but if no-one sped then they would find another way to get money out of you. I swear speeding tickets/ parking tickets are just another form of tax.

Your getting some kind of fine whether you like it or not. I just think you should be able to claim it as money paid in taxes.

Well smarty pants https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png much of what you describe comes from grants issued by the government (washington)so none of it comes out of the local budget.

But tickets/fines and such go directly into the local governement spending account as revenue. That's why you hear about the most profital counties and such have major interstates and speed traps in them.

Please don't be so nieve as to think that any government is hurting for money.

defprun 06-22-2004 12:16 PM

I didnt know this was a local issue, bleh.

TYSON 06-22-2004 12:17 PM

The federal government is. deficit spending = spending money you don't have.

twstdmtl 06-22-2004 12:20 PM

Hmmm I used to write for grants with the KY State Police https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png So I know where most of the funding for these "sting" activities come from. Even though it is extra- agency funding there are tight restrictions that have to be met. The proposal for said grant monies have to outline projected expenditures like I just did.

Mainly I was making fun of the capital expenditures in general. Regardless of who flips the bill it seems a bit absurb.

BTW try some decaf and relax dawg its just a little NP fun https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Sinful7 06-22-2004 12:22 PM

You know, I have to say that's one of the BEST things about living in Adams County, CO. That's the Thorton/Northglenn/Brighton police, and they are pretty damn cool. My buddy was doing 68 in a 45 near my house, got nailed by a stealth po, gave him an excuse about the speedo being off and was let off! Northglenn cops are especially nice. Sunday night, a bunch of racers were meeting in a grocery store parking lot meeting up, and there were several bikers with us too. The cops rolled up.. four cars with 7 officers, they harassed the bikers a bit but said NOTHING to the car guys! We all had illegal exhausts, lighting, plate violations, tag violations, drag slicks, nitrous, etc. and they knew it. They not only left after 20 minutes, but when they left they didn't just go 10 minutes down the road to hide and wait for us!

We are typically rolling 10 cars deep heading to race, and you'd think that when we pass a cop he'd get behind us and follow, but when we turn off the road they just keep going. It's almost like they have some real police work to do or something!

Anyhow, even when I do get a ticket (I know it will happen), I'll still love those guys, because they are the most reasonable PD I've ever encountered! It might help that I'm a resident, and they know my car, and my entire city is only 9 sq miles.. but still.

Oh, and sorry to hear about your misfortune Jim, I'm glad you're fighting it!!
