In the earlier Miami episodes, he actually does some lab work and such, I guess the hokey lines looked better in front of explosions and stuff.

On the other 2 CSI programs, the main guys (Gary Sinese sp?, and the guy that play Gill Grissom) don't do all the hero stuff, they actually try to solve the crimes with evidence. Amazing!
