So I'm getting back into my coffee in the morning routine. Just bought a nice coffee maker. I bought a can of the Foldgers colombian, it's okay but I like something a little stronger. Suggestions?

Egad! Canned ground coffee? I like to keep a can of Yuban organic around in case of emergency.

You need a grinder. Buy whole bean coffee. Eight O'Clock Columbian used to be decent, but I didn't care for the last couple bags I bought. Try different stuff until you find something you really like. I usually pick up a 2-lb. bag from BJ's and store it in the freezer. I'll grind a week's worth or so at a time. Last two coffees I bought were a Kona blend, and something called Blue Mountain coffee. Both were okay, not great. I'm naturally cheap, so finding a good coffee at a reasonable price is something of a challenge.

Perhaps the most exotic coffee I ever had was some Kenyan. Might have been from Gevalia. It was damn good.

i drink way too much coffee to get too picky about what it is, otherwise i'd be completely broke

phinsup 11-18-2008 09:18 AM

Does home grinding really make that big of a difference? I'm just happy that for 30 bucks I got a coffee maker with an adjustable heating plate, adjustable strength of the coffee, water filter and a timer. So now all I have to do is pour it into my thermos as I head out the door. Don't have to think about it in the morning, which is really nice.

we french press our coffee, no coffee maker we also grind it, I order my coffee from costa rica, that canned coffee looks like tobacco.

I think it does. Like anything, you could go crazy and obsess over it. For me, two minutes of grinding once a week is worth it.

actually it's easier for me to do it that way, I have a grinder that holds a whole bag of beans, so i dump the beans in there and grind it when i make a pot, it would be more of an inconvenience to do it your way. I can see where if you had one of those little jobbers where it might be easier your way, but that's not how i roll.

j9fd3s 11-18-2008 11:19 AM

the grinder thing is a weird deal, because you need to grind the beans for the filter or press you use, and i dont see a home grinder that does this?

Shoot! Any bean pulverizer will work fine. You just have to judge how long to grind for best results. I don't mind taking the grind to near powder, because it gives a nice, dark, flavorful brew.

Of course, the better grinders consist of two grinding wheels or burrs that crush the beans between them, but I've always used the little lawnmower blade thingie. Cheap, and reasonably effective. Plus, it scares the cat.

Rob x-7 11-18-2008 12:06 PM

we grind beans and use the french press

only other advice I can give is to use a old fashioned perculator machine, not a drip machine.

Nateb123 11-18-2008 02:25 PM

Yeah, get a grinder, and grind just before you make coffee. Makes a huge difference. And don't put coffee in the freezer or fridge, just keep it in a dark area in an airtight vessel. Cold makes the oils of the coffee harden to solids and pretty much destroys the coffee's flavour.

French press is also the way to go. Put the water in for 4 minutes, then plunge and serve. It's cheap and makes the best coffee. Just make sure to grind the beans to a pretty coarse grind, like to the point where you can still see the grinds are chips, but they're getting close to being a powder.

By the way, African coffee is the way to go. Latin American coffees are mild and acidic. Asian and Pacific coffees are dark and not acidic at all. African coffees are where all the flavour is at. Starbucks sells a couple types of African beans. One tastes and smells like grapefruit, one like lemons.

I used to be a barista and I've become a hardcore coffee lover as a result. I have a problem. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.gif

phinsup 11-18-2008 05:04 PM

No any grinder wont work for a french press, if you grind it too fine you will have grounds in your coffee. Here is the one i have only $50 http://www.amazon.com/Cuisinart-DBM-8-Supr...431&sr=1-10

1988RedT2 11-18-2008 07:15 PM

Dang sissies! A pot of boiling water and ground up coffee is all you need!

I think it's more like a V8. Loads of caffeine kick and a bad taste in your mouth.

the very best cup of coffee I ever had came from a $12 camping perculator, over a campfire- real manly stuff.

1988RedT2 11-19-2008 12:25 PM

Just bought a bag of "Barista Brava" Colomian from Sam's Club. Says its by Quartermaine. Any good?

And Phins, they've got that cuisinart burr grinder for $29! Might have to get one.

Yeah, coffee over a fire does some cool stuff. I don't know why, but if you get the coffee as fine as you can and make it turkish style over the flame, it is gooooood.

phinsup 11-19-2008 02:43 PM

i've had the fancy coffee pots, espresso machines, etc we always end up back at the french press.

Nateb123 11-19-2008 04:45 PM

I buy my espresso at coffee shops. It takes so much to make a good espresso. Good beans, matched to the equipment that's gonna be used, a good machine (ie. coffee shop quality which is certainly not cheap) and someone who rocks the manual bar. Why put in all that money and effort? It would take so much espresso to pay off the costs, plus who wants the hassle of getting pissed off at 7am because they're too sleepy to pull decent shots?

phinsup 11-19-2008 04:51 PM

there's only one decent shop around here and they charge a fortune, it's like $4 for a 16 ounce americano, i drink 10+ coffees per day I can't afford to buy that **** from the espresso bar.

G2G 11-20-2008 09:20 AM

Well it's also a convience and time issue for me. Getting home from work at 4:30 in the morning and then waking up at 7:30 to go to class or a meeting, I don't really want to sit around making coffee, I'd rather have it do it by itself so I can just grab it as I hit the door.

See I'm in a good situation right now. My two roomates are my GM and the GM at one of our other bars. Every Thursday this lady I've been sleeping with cooks the three of us plus one of our friends at a bar up the road dinner. So we get a home cooked meal at work every Thursday. She buys my drugs when I get sick, legal drugs that is, and even sometimes does the laundry if she sleeps over. But I can still bring a bar ***** from work home if I feel like something different. So I don't really want to lose this by commiting anything more.

So the chick that cooks for you is also banging 4 other guys you're living with? I'm sure you've just saved the trouble once and a while and all had a go at the same time.

I only say this because you did say you weren't exclusive...

That's just so damn wrong, lmao.

There's nothing wrong with the occasional orgy or gangbang. I mean seriously who hasn't given a reach around to a monkey in a love quartet?

it takes like 4 minutes to brew a pot of coffee homeboy

you could drop a really fast deuce and have coffee ready by the time youre done, dont gimme this no-time-to-make-my-own bs

psyclo 11-24-2008 11:06 PM

Longer the brew the more course the grind, allows the proper amount of oils to escape, you take out too much and it tastes acidic or burnt.

French press = course, Espresso = fine (+ tamped)

A lighter roast will be sweeter, a darker smokeyer.

Actually if your going for caffeine content a light roast will be better also, as more heat from darker roasting breaks down the caffeine.

A. I'm not ready to **** until after I've had my coffee

B. I like not having to go to the kitchen turn the pot on and what not before taking a shower.

C. It's extremely convenient, all I have to do is set it the night before as I brush my teeth.

I'm lazy when it comes to mundane tasks like this, so being able to expedite the process is nice.
