ok my clutch slips in every gear except for 1st. all i have is a shitty lil 2 ton jack and 2 jackstands. if i can get the car high enough off the ground, but does anyone have a guess on how much a 88 gxl 5 speed tranny weighs?





my tranny is starting to kinda catch when i shift and sometimes grinds, its not that bad but the clutch assembly needs replaced, is this due to a bad clutch assembly (pressure plate,clutch disk, throw out bearing, pilot bearing)? or does anyone think i need a new tranny? how important is it to get the flywheel resurfaced? can i tell if it needs it? thanks for the help.

I would say the tranny weights around 200 pounds max, since I can pick one up and move it around the shop myself.

You really should resurface the flywheel, if not you will have problems latter with clutch chatter and pre-mature wear

Yeah get the flywheel resurfaced..around here in Tampa..you can get it done about $20...





and dont let no one cut it on a brake lathe...find a shop who makes or deals with clutches and flywheels

You have the tools to take off the flywheel? 54mm socket and a BIG *** BREAKER BAR. Plus the flywheel holder thingy from mazdatrix works good. The tool that mazda sell is like $60...

Well the trans isnt that heavy its prob more like 50lbs or at least the Turbo II trans is about that weight. Anyway, the weight isnt really the prob, you just need to support it real well as your taking the last bolts off and if your doing this yourself its going to be hard to hold it with one hand and work with the other. Once you get the car up on jack stands pull your jack out and use that to support the transmission. Do the transmission mount last to that there isnt any way it can just fall out onto the ground. Using a jack you should be able to undo the mount and lower it pretty easy all by yourself. Just go slow and take your time.



The grinding MIGHT be from your clutch going out but it could be bad syncros or something as well. It could be a handful of things. If your grinding gears you've prob done some damage to them and the syncros, you dont have to grind too many times before the teeth get grinded down. Hopefully its ok though.

OK definetely resurface the flywheel, no question there. As far as getting the car up, get yourself a set of jackstands, jack it up, remove the driveline, and exhaust back to the y pipe. Then lay under the tranny, remove the bolts and let it sit on your chest, then just shimmy out from underneath it and you are good to go. I never actually remove the tranny from underneath the car when I do a clutch on anything, espcially something that sits as low as the RX-7.

it weighs 120lbs. U can lift it down yourself out of your car, i did it with my bare hands.

Turbo II

yes, u must refsurfave the flywheel and follow the steps SPOautos gave. just be prepared to pull off all ur cats just to get to the tranny. i found that so hard to get those damn exhaust bolts off. and from my experience i dont believe the tranny from a TII wights 50lbs. more like 150 since it took 2 off us to put that **** back in their along with jack (re-aligning it)

flywheel should only take 20 mins to refsurface and about $20.

yea, that might be right. i dont know how much it weight for sure I just remember that the 3rd gen trans is pretty damn hard for one person to carry but I can carry it myself. The 2nd gen trans seemed much lighter than the 3rd gen. I've never actually weighed any of them.



Use the jack and it wont matter what it weights.....unless its like 3 tons haha
