Buying an RX7
#1
Guys / Gals,
having owned an MR2 Turbo for the past year and a member of the mr2
owners club, drivers club, etc etc, i fancied a change, so i sold it
and am now looking into getting a more powerful car, which is EASIER
to mod.
I've been researching the Supra and the Rx-7 as the alternative car.
Supra is a bit of tank for me (am only 5'7") , and i'll look too
small init, so that leaves me with the Rx-7.
I've always loved the looks of the Rx-7, its distinct, and there
isn't any around where i live!
However, i guess you guys know this was coming...the engine!
I've heard all kinds of stories that the engine is suspect. I gotta
basic understanding of how the rotary works, and am currently looking
at it on www.howstuffworks.com (good sight that). However, i would
like past owners experiences of the Rx-7 and its engine failures. I
heard somewhere they need rebuilding after 40,000 miles...surely this
ain't true?
I'd be looking into getting an FD3S...the ones made after 1992 i
think right? Also, what is the efini model? Do they have a targa
option? Are there any difference between the imported rx-7s and UK
spec Rx-7s. I ask this cos there are major differences between UK and
imported Supras, especially when you want to mod 'em, like ecu,
injectors, brakes, alloys...all need uprating if you buy an imported
Supra!
Are there any specific changes made after 1992 to the FD3S, which i
should take into account?
Best...Muhsin

Well the engines generally need coolant seals replaced at about 60k . Some make it a little longer but that is the exception I think. The apex seals can go at any time but usually occurs ude to improper tunning.
The fd3s (3rd gen) Came in several models. I couldn't tell you which ones went to Europe. In the states we got the base model, touring, and the R1 and R2 respectively. The r1 is the sports model for 93-94. Dual oil coolers, strut tower brace, stiffer suspension, suede seats, No bs parts lke moon roofs and rear wipers. The R2 is the 95 sports model. I don't really know what changes were made between the two.
The touring package came with the BOSE sound wave system, moon roof, leather seats, single oil cooler, rear wiper. The base is exactly what it sounds like. The engine and turbo system is the same in all these cars. Implemented changes to the turbo and engine in the 3rd gen didn't come around till 99. We never got this far in the states. Imports stopped coming in after the 95 model. As sales dipped to much for Mazda.
Efini is the Japanese name given to rx7's.It really means nothing important. The stock RX7 is by far one of the best sports cars ever put into production. 50/50 weight distribution. A pwer to weight ratio 2nd only to Ferrari and the classy timeless style that will transcend the 3rd gen RX7 into legendary status like such cars as the Shelby Cobra.
These cars are the quintesential Japanese sports car. A true super car by anyones standards. It will show the most gains when moddified than any other car in my opinion. I have seen countless supras race Fd's and usually the Fd wins. If autocrossing is your game there is nothing better.
Tread lightly because once bitten by the rx7 bug you will never look at any other car the same.
