Alright I'm getting an AR15. I need to decide what to get. Looking for advice from people in the forces or people with experience.

-I've narrowed it down to a big name quality piece like Rock River, DPMS, Bushmaster, Etc...

-I'm looking to build a nice medium-long range target rifle

-Looking for a useful range out to about 500 yards for people size targets

-Barrel between 16" and 20"

-Flat top upper with flip up sights to co-witness with an optic...hopefully.

-Budget up to about $1300 with optics

Now questions:

1. Do I need a heavy barrel or bull barrel for accuracy out to 500 yards?

2. What optics are you guys in the forces/LE using? I'm interested in the Eotech and Aimpoint, but I'm thinking some magnification for 500 yard shots would be nice to have. I'm not paying $1000 for an ACOG.

3. Is a foward rail system worth the money? This wouldn't really be a close range type weapon, I have an AK for that. So flashlight and laser mounting isn't really necessary. But it could be useful I guess. Only thing I'd likely be mounting is a bipod.

4. Collapsable stocks are they really that useful to a civilian?

5. Anything else I missed?

You arent climbing any clocktowers by chance are you?

sweet7 10-25-2005 12:07 AM

Rock River Arms makes a pretty good platform. In fact the only person I'd stay away from is Armalite. Basically, yes you are gonna want a heavy barrel. With the 21" in barrel on you're average M-16A4 its easily good out past 300m, but for 500m+ you're gonna wanna get a bit heavier one.

As far as optics go that kinda varys on what you wanna do. But remember, you get what you pay for. I use the ACOG on my M4, a Leupold 4x10 on our match M110s (think sniper M16) and a a variation of 12x20 scopes on our M24s and Barretts. Honestly for 500m at people sized targets, you're gonna want something with a little more magnifacation than just 4x.

Hope that helps

umm id assist you but i dont want to be charged with nothing if youre going out and killing people.

I have shot the Bushmaster DCM Match, I would highly reccomend it as is out of the box, I dont use a scope, the Marine Corp didnt teach me to fire with one so I never used one after that. For people sized targets you wont need one with the competition sights the DCM comes with.

I respectfully completely disagree. At 300meters a person sized target is pretty tiny with open sights. At 500m a person sized target is going to be basically indistiguishable.

Also, an optic at high ranges will help you decipher winds, mirages, and air temperature. All of which are serious factors at long range shooting.

I'm saying I want a nice medium range semi auto rifle with decent ammo capacity for whatever purpose I choose. If you don't like it then stay the **** out of my thread. This WILL NOT turn into an anti gun thread.

in case that wa sslightly pointed at me, i have like 30-40 guns in my house and hunt just about everything, since i was old enough to shoot a gun i have been.

I just think the wording in your post is a little, ermm "bad choice"

you want a high-powered, long distance rifle, with high powered optics to shoot at "people sized targets"

i mean you couldve said "deer sized" or a million other things. but you said people.

just a poor choice in wording is all.

and chill, with a temper like that and you getting a rifle like that its not a good combination.

marine corps teaches you to fire at a target at a distance of 500 METERS, with no scope and people hit it just fine, if he is thinking of going into competition thats a different story I suppose. But it is more then doable considering the USMC's rifles arent anywhere near as accurate as a DCM match

It wasn't directed at anyone in general. I'm just tired of people jumping into gun threads and talking all kind of anti gun ****, and joking or not people already started. Theres honestly no temper here. I just couldn't give a **** if certain people think guns are bad, Its my money and I'll buy whatever the hell I want.

As for the people sized target comment, it was just an easy word to use. Stop being so sensitive.

I know you Marines are taught to believe that you are the best shooters on earth, and after competing against a few Marine snipers its hard for me to disagree. But c'mon, you're average shooter cant knock down an E-type silloutte at 300m, much less 500m with open sights. I regulary shoot at distances in excess of 800m with the M24SWS. But, even at 500m with a precision .308 its not just point and shoot. I think you are forgetting that 500m is a pretty damn good distance away.

RotorDemon 10-26-2005 03:25 AM

I have a DPMS Lower, Bushmaster 16" HBAR A2 upper, M4 feedramp cuts. Hogue grip. Shooting crap wolf ammo with iron sights I can group 3" at 300 yards. I could never do that with my AK. I just put the scope on it a few days ago so I haven't tried it yet.

they teach you to do that in 1 week with beat to death rifles, im sure someone with a much more accurate rifle can manage no problem. They dont give you super eye sight to shoot the targets, I would just rather learn on old iron sights and then use the scope later on, this way you know you can shoot.

Oh I completely agree that relying on optics is for chumps. But 93 R1 already seems like hes a decent shot. All I'm saying is that 500m+ is a pretty decent distance. He said he wanted to be able to hit a decent sized target at 500m. But unless you are shooting people thats about the only decent sized target he'd be shooting at. The .223 is too small to use for big game in most states, so that pretty much narrows down his targets to varmints and target shooting. Both of which i recommend optics for at 500m+.

But yes, if you're not a decent shot with iron sights you have no buisness with optics.

93 R1 10-26-2005 08:42 AM

Yeah, I've been shooting guns for about 15 years. I'm fairly capable with iron sights. Can't say I've ever tried 500 with irons though.

The new plan of action is this.

Rock River Elite CAR A4 16" chrome lined, mid-length full float handguard, national match trigger, flip up irons, A3 style flat top, a low magnification(2.5x) sight, and possibly an EOtech. Should be great for 100-300 plus meters.

I already have a semi auto AK that is awesome out to 150-200 meters off the irons, even with cheap ass ammo.

For the longer **** I'm gonna grab a Remington 700P or the new FN patrol rifle in .308, with a nice 10x illuminated reticle scope, bipod.

sweet7 10-26-2005 08:47 AM

Great choice, I full expect pics when you get it!

GreyGT-C 10-26-2005 09:39 AM

I had a Daisy Red Rider® BB gun when i was younger. It was very accurate up to about 4 meters.

Yeah top left and middle right are the Barrett .50cal.

We have just about every version of the MP5 on the market, although they dont leave the arms room very often.

Glad you bought the civi equivalent of the M4A4 model. I dont have any pics of my M4 will of the "gucci" **** on it, but to say the least id be fucked without the forward rail-system. You'll love it.

That M16 looking scoped rifle is a bad bitch. It fires NATO 7.62mm, shoots a 2" group in excess of 800m, and is the tightest shooting AR platform I've ever been around. No play between the upper and lower recievers, none of the typical **** that plagues the AR platforms. The Army paid something like $300,000 for 10 of them. ******* thing is as pricey as the Barrett.

93 R1 10-27-2005 03:26 PM

Hey if you arent using the MP5's just send them ym way. I'll keep them warm for you https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png Thats the coolest full auto I've shot, but my auto experience is limited to MP5, Uzi, and a poorly converted illegal AK that would just slam fire until the clip was empty.

I didn't order mine yet I'm waiting on some price quotes from a few places, should be ordered in the next week though.

As for your scoped M16 does it shoot 7.62x39 or x54. For 800m its gotta be the x54 right?

The DCM in bare bones form costs just as much if not more then what I want to spend altogether.

venomrx7 10-27-2005 06:53 PM

I was shooting a friends modified Armalite M4 today. I liked it, with the exception of one thing, the foward stock didn't feel solid. I don't know if he fucked with something when he was mounting some of the mods or what, but it just didn't feel solid. It shot beautifully though.

We also toyed around with a Benelli riot control 12 gauge. I REALLY like that gun. It didn't have any choke, so the spread was pretty loose (Its for riot control...) but it shot beautifully.

We love the MP5s too, but out here you're gambling if you carry one. We'll stash one or two in each humvee, and just use them as fire hoses for any vehicles that can get under the arc, and inside the M2 .50cal on the roof.

Actually neither, 7.62mm NATO (in this case) is 7.62x51. Its basically a .308 round with a few distinct differences.
