So, I got put on 'Verbal Warning' yesterday at the office for excessive tardiness. I thought I was doing pretty well in that department, so I asked my supervisor if he could tell me when I was late and where. Here's the correspondance:

Hey,

Just wondering if you have some kind of data on my tardiness frequency, because I was under the impression that even though I call you on a regular basis, anticipating my tardiness, I most often manage to get in by 8AM. Seems to me that it's only been recently (over the last two weeks) that I've had a problem with being a few minutes late. I know I'm probably way off, but if you have any data, it'd help me figure out what is going on so I can best correct it.

5 times in 3 weeks (4 weeks if you count the week you were off). I didn’t say anything to Grant the first 4 times, but it’s time to solve the problem

Would you say it was the two weeks before I went on vacation that I was late on the Thursdays and Fridays? And then one other day in there somewhere? I don't keep track of this sort of thing, I seem to recall being significantly late on one of the days, but if memory serves that was a freak large traffic accident that really screwed traffic up. Just trying to pinpoint what happened.

Other than what you described as two consecutive thursday-fridays, you aren't sure what dates I was late, or by how much? I know we've been over this in prior disciplinary functions, but any help I can get is definetly appreciated, because I actually do intend on never letting it happen again.

Sorry for all the questions, but the more I think about it, the more I feel surprised by this action, and that makes me concerned. In the past that I felt scared; I knew I was going to be disciplined. Whereas this time, it was very unexpected. I had considered my recent performance in the office to be better than average, which furthers the confusion for me.

Just be at work at 8am. When you are not in the office at at 8am, you can expect a trip to Grant's office. I told him at 8:10 yesterday that you were late, and this afternoon was the first time he had available to speak to you. i won't be speaking to you on my own about this anymore. i will be letting him know what time you show up and that's it.

Alrighty then.

I love how I can be arbitrarily put on probation because someone thinks I was late at some time on some consecutive days over the last month.. Which, aside from Monday, I'd have to argue with. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683664.gif

I knew there was a reason I'd never become management - I actually think managing people requires personal skills and a helpful attitude. Anytime I ask my supervisor any question, I feel like I'm gonna get fired. WTF.

phinsup 09-08-2005 09:41 AM

**** that, if it were me I would go this grant guy and defend your position, where is it documented. Is there a time clock? It's pretty hard to say you're late all the time if it's just one guy who come's back and checks your desk, wut if you are taking a leak, getting coffee.

93 R1 09-08-2005 09:43 AM

"Maybe you weren't aware of MY schedule" is what I would have said

phinsup 09-08-2005 09:44 AM

Of course i would have sent one more email that said something like, "eat ****"

ColinRX7 09-08-2005 09:48 AM

dont take his ****!

Sinful7 09-08-2005 09:51 AM

ROFL!

Yeah, we don't have time clocks. Grant is the manager, over Ryan, who is the supervisor. It's basically Ryan's job to snitch on us.

I was told over and over that I needed to be here around 8AM, and a few minutes was no big deal. So here I am, going along thinking I'm doing great, not even thinking about if I've been late because it's always right at or within a few minutes of 8AM, if not earlier. Then yesterday I get this call from Grant and he wants me in his office. I thought I was going to be praised for completing my cross-training and becoming the only person in the group trained on all the systems and on two other seperate jobs. Turns out I was getting written up for something I didn't even think about!

It's ok though.. it's not like it's a huge deal at this point. And the warning only sits in my personnel record for 6 months.

Cheers! 09-08-2005 10:05 AM

Maybe you should snitch on Ryan and return the favor. I remember taking a statistic class in university and the most successful methodology has always been, eye for an eye, ear for an ear.

Backstabbers have no place in teh office. A successful business depends on its key resources which is always the employees. Lack of team work and team philosophy is what usually kills a department.

Sinful7 09-08-2005 10:07 AM

That's what I thought. I'm thinking I'm gonna call the anonymous employee complaint line.

CrashFactory 09-08-2005 10:13 AM

Wow, I wish printing worked like that..if I'm late I get to see like 3 ppl.......and it goes on my record for a year...then again it's a labor job not office job, so I guess the rules are different. ANyone wanna trade a labor job for a desk job!?

I had to come into work before everyone else when i starte being late, but now i just sit around till like 10 mins after just to make up for me coming late. it shouldnt matter what time you go at, if your a couple mins late you should just be able to make it up.

See, that's a great point, and something I try to follow already. I guess it doesn't matter when you leave as long as you're here by 8AM.. even though I worked 8.5 hrs yesterday and Tuesday.

TYSON 09-08-2005 11:18 AM

Steal his stapler

Sinful7 09-08-2005 11:26 AM

I ought to **** in his eye. But I will steal his stapler instead.

UniqueTII 09-08-2005 11:43 AM

Damn, that's stupid.

Baldy 09-08-2005 12:05 PM

I'm not sure what e-mail program you can use, but you should be able to write an e-mail and set it to be delivered at a certain time. Then you can set it to deliver later than usual, or right at 8 am, so it looks like you were there.

1revnrex 09-08-2005 12:42 PM

PC Load letter?! What the **** does that mean?!

ApneaBlue 09-08-2005 12:44 PM

Heres what I would do...

I think I have to go with Dramon on this one "**** CORPORATE AMERICA!"

When I leave my company I am not working for anyone but myself.

Cooper 09-08-2005 01:21 PM

Its managers like that who piss me off the most. It took me 3 years to finally get it through my bosses head that people should be judged on productivity and not what time they come in in the morning. It was a hella headache trying to get him to go for it but now strolling into work at ten when everyone else was there at 8 feels awesome. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683329.gif ha

Sinful7 09-08-2005 02:07 PM

I guess the part that really bothers me is that I see these people more than I see anyone else in my life. I've been working with them for the last 5 years.. and over those five years, I spend 37% of my awake time in the office. Yet I can't trust them any further than I can see them, and I can't take anything I'm told without a grain of salt.

It's total BS.. I'm ready to start my own business.

Dramon_Killer 09-08-2005 03:13 PM

Maybe your situation would change if you'd PIIDB.

Sinful7 09-08-2005 03:23 PM

You must mean TIIDB.. Because I PIIDB as much as humanly possible.

Baldy 09-08-2005 03:43 PM

I've been at my job 5 years also. Today I got a certificate and a fancy little pin that shows I've been here 5 years. Awesome.

Well........I've been at my job 6.5 years and I automatically get stock in the company! And I stroll in at 9 in the morning when everyone else gets here at 6 & 7. Actually, I expect them to be calling me on this any day now. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/unsure.png

Was that the right answer?

TYSON 09-08-2005 05:11 PM

lol

sweet7 09-08-2005 11:37 PM

Hahah Steve-O, that dude is a ******* snitch. You should have told me about it that day we went to lunch. You could have let me in the officer, i could go up there, bust him in the grill and say "Shaddup Biatch" then walk out.

Then 30 seconds later you come in and go "who was that psycho?"

Mazda Man 09-09-2005 11:22 AM

The good think about where I work, Luis (RIP) always used to say. If your late 30 minutes, then you should stay back 30 minutes. He always understood cause you can't control peak traffic and if there's an accident then there's nothing you can do and that, it's not your fault.

He only would say something, if you did it too many times. He was a good boss.

CletusFD3S 09-09-2005 12:11 PM

Sounds like you had anawesome boss. LUCKY!

treceb 09-09-2005 12:26 PM

my boss is great. hope he doesnt find out im almost always late....

it does suck that if hes supposed to be supervising all of yous and he accuses you of being late he shouldve had proof of the instances you were late and the last time he spoke to you and told you to not be late and such. i dunno what kinda "relationship" you have with your superiors but if its really that big a deal id talk to the guy that actually gave you the verbal warning and bypass the other prick...

then if keeping your job is important, id try to set up a meeting maybe once a month for the next few months with both your superiors to discuss how youve improved on your tardiness or if tehres any other things that they feel you should work on, that way all 3 of you are on the same page.

94touring 09-09-2005 12:39 PM

I've had jobs where I could roll in 30 minutes later and no one would care, and other jobs if you were 1 minute late you got an ear full. Some people are a little more high strung than others, and I think thats what it comes down to. Because what easy going person is gona care about a few minutes here or there?
