Very funny. Anyway I'm pretty sure they don't have "lake effect" or whatever that is in England either - care to elaborate?

Water is a poor conductor of heat. It takes a long time to heat up and a long time to cool down in comparison with other materials. So as the earth cools down the sea and lakes cool down but at a much smaller rate. So once a lake is cold enough well this happens. Precipitation from lakes will enter the atmosphere and snow on the areas surrounding them. Hence why places around lakes generally have a high amount of snow comparred to other areas.
