Hey, before you replace this thread ni a diff section, i dont mean it as a serious thread but i got into an arguement with my friend and he's telling me smallblocks and big blocks are no different other than gas mileage, just as easy to tune, and have the same reliability.

I say differently but i really dont know that much as domestic engines are completely out of my element. Anyways help me out with any info you guys might have.

it always depends, but i think he has an argument...

This is one of those topics that can be discussed until the sun comes up. If you want your boinger to turn, use a well-built SB, if you just want to go straight or you've got a truck, go for the BB.

Yep. The SB will turn alot more, which depending on the use, is very useful. The BB is the torquey type. And yes, they get poor gas mileage. My uncle's 67' Chevelle 396 SS car (now with 454 BB) gets a whopping 7 miles per gallon. On Turbo Blue, that is. U can tell it has the torque because when he comes off the line, the whole front of the car twists to the side. In stock form, he twisted the frame....so he had to upgrade to some kind of Hotchkis suspension. The SB is less likely to do something like this. IMO, I like the SB better, though. When built, they don't tend to deafen U like the BB does. I think there are more options for boost with the SB as well. I don't really know about tuning and reliability differences. I'm sure they have their nitty gritty differences, but are similar in the basics.

if you've ever seen em side by side the big block is a lot bigger, and since its iron like a battleship its heavy.

mmmmm 454 BB..

Yup.. Gas mileage I guess would suck.. heck stock they were getting like 11 or less.. A bored out small block might spend less but I think there are so many variables since cams and carbs can also play a role in that..

Really? Didn't know that. The one we built isn't bored, though. Has aftermarket cam, a port & polish, a Holley 800 DP, forged pistons, and runs 14.2:1 compression. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683329.gif I guess that's why it sucks.

I'm workin' on a Ford SB (5.0 roller motor). Thinkin' bout' puttin' it in my Ranger. FoMoCo parts are so expensive!!!! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683358.gif

1/2 Chevy, 1/4 Ford and 1/4 MOPAR guy here. Big Blocks in most muscle cars handle even worse than their Small Block counterpart, but thr BB makes LOTS more power. Bigger heads=better flow=engine better pump

SeventyMach1 07-24-2003 11:25 PM

LOL! I think the BB's were made for the 1/4 Mi. @ a time. Unless they were in a truck.

BTW: 60% Ford---30% Chebby---5% Rotary Freak---5% Moparts (only muscle cars)= 100% car enthusiast. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

We can go on about the whole BB SB thing but once you smoke the rears of a Hemi, you won't want anything else. LOL
