Ok, I'm sure a few of you guys remember before I was talking about that person that was going to send a check for my car and I wasn't sure if it was going to be fraud or not... Well I woke up today and my mail from yesterday was on my computer desk, and I opened one of them from someone I didn't know, and inside was an official bank check for $10,400. Yea I almost **** my pants... I'm still curious if it is fraud, I don't think so though because it is from a very well known bank that my parents also use. I'm supposed to take out my cut then send the rest to the shipping company to ship the car, I am just waiting to here back from the person that bought it now. Good morning to me!

Eric Happy Meal 12-12-2004 02:21 PM

ask the bank if its fraudulent or not. im about 90% sure theyll call the cops about it, but you dont have to worry about that.

bodzilla02 12-12-2004 02:37 PM

Well just as long as I get my money that's all I care about. I want my freakin FD!!! haha, it won't be til probably spring though so I can save up, but still.

teknics 12-12-2004 02:40 PM

if you deposit it in your account wait at least 2 weeks ebfore shipping anything....the bank may at first say its perfectly fine only to call you in 10days to tell you they removed the money from your account because it was a fraudulent check...thats how this specific type of scam gets you.

no one in their right mind just gives out a 10k check.

kevin.

bodzilla02 12-12-2004 03:51 PM

Yea that sounds good, I questioned it being fraud because it is from such a well-known company. I'll leave it in there a while and see how things go, thanks for the help.

teknics 12-12-2004 03:53 PM

yea see thats what they plan on. They send you a check from a normal bank, even one with a great name...the only deal is they dont have the money to back it up,.

so at first the bank you deposit it into is like "yea the check is 100% fine and legal" then usually in around 10days they get back to you, tell you the check was actually bad, and take the money out fo your account.

THats generally why the people sending these checks want their things shipped "immediately"

kevin.

bodzilla02 12-12-2004 03:55 PM

So what should I do about the car then? Wait 10-14 days before I ship it? I'd be some freakin pissed if I shipped the car then had the money taken back.

teknics 12-12-2004 03:57 PM

Tell the guy who sent you the check "My bank said it would take about 2 weeks until the money clears, I will ship it once they assure me the money is cleared and in my bank account permanently"

if it is a good check he has nothing to worry about.

WATCH OUT!!! I got a Cashier's check for a deposit on a car from a friend of a friend three years ago.. I deposited it, waited 14 business days before I started spending against it. After 30 calendar days, a STOP PAYMENT was put on the check, I overdrafted nearly a grand and got hit with a grand of additional overdraft fees!! I waited and it STILL cost me TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS. Go to the bank of issuance, CASH THAT MOFO and then deposit the CASH into your account. Be sure you tell the bank that you're concerned about the authenticity of the bank check! If there's nothing wrong with it, then everything's cool, and if there is, they'll go after the check's purchaser.

bodzilla02 12-12-2004 04:46 PM

Ok, I'll do that tomorrow. Also I was just looking at the check and something caught my eye... Well normall in the upper left hand corner of a check, it says the person's name, but this time it says the bank's name. Also, normally how checks have one edge will be perforated, like it's been torn from a book of some sort, or something like that.... well all 4 edges on this check are perfectly smooth. This is starting to worry me...

Bank issued checks, or Cashier's Checks will look like that. The purchaser gives the teller cash, and the teller writes out a check.. 'Cept those are usually printed, not hand-written.

Damn... and that's from a friend of yours too... I'm not exactly sure how I would go to the bank off issuance, in the upper left hand corner it says some bank's name from Germany, then down lower it says Payment Bank The Chase Manhattan Bank, in Sracuse, NY. I live in Maine... Dammit this sucks, what do I do now??

It is printed, not hand written. Sorry I should have specified that.

Look for a Chase Bank branch near you, or go to Bank One, they're affiliated.

Edit: At least call them and check around. Also, you can go to your bank and do the same thing. Just be sure you explain it to them, I'm sure they'll be happy to help.

bodzilla02 12-12-2004 05:01 PM

I would be able to cash it at my bank? My bank is Peoples Heritage, so I don't know if they'll cash something so big or not. Also I took a pic of it, but edited out the personal stuff and numbers at the bottom just in case. Here:

Edit: Yes I know it's sorta blurry, sometimes I don't have a steady hand haha.

spaceman Spiff 12-12-2004 05:22 PM

send it to me and sign the back of it i will tell you if it is good or not.

bodzilla02 12-12-2004 08:08 PM

hahaha Good try, I'm going to the bank tomorrow, I'll let you guys know what happens.

good call because not many people have $10k sitting in a bank account

Sinful7 12-12-2004 10:32 PM

WTF! That's a bank check from Germany? lol Dude, that thing is fake.

Take it to your bank, they'll be able to spot a fraud. If not your bank, the nearest major bank chain. I also mentioned BankOne, they're a subsidiary of JPMorgan Chase, sister company to Chase Manhattan Bank. So if you can find one of those, I'd go there too.. Especially if your bank can't figure it out.

bodzilla02 12-12-2004 11:39 PM

Well BankOne owns my bank or something, I asked my mom about it and she told me that so when I go tomorrow I am going to check on that. Also the girl that is "buying the car" is in Europe, so I don't know. If I can get this thing cashed I will be very happy.

ryosuke_fc 12-13-2004 12:35 AM

I donno if you're aware or not, but there's a big Scam that has really exploded in the past couple of years on the internet called 419 scams. They're based out of Nigeria, and actually started in the '80's through the mail, but the internet has made it so much easier. Some are through e-mail, but often they have bots that search the internet and find people selling/auctioning just about anything. Most of the time they will send you a bad check for over the amount, and have you send the "change" back to an address of an "associate" or something similar somewhere in Europe. Then they send you an e-mail about purchasing the item. Often the scam can be recognized, because they don't know anything about the item they're purchasing. My friend came into contact with one of these guys when he was selling about $1k of hockey equipment on ebay. He didn't recognize it until he recieved the bad check. I think you could check the IP Address in the e-mails that you're recieving. That will tell you if the e-mails are coming from where they tell you they're coming from. But that's still not really enough. I won't sell anything to anyone outside the U.S./Canada, unless they're paying with Paypal. The fact that someone is willing to ship a car overseas is very suspicious in itself. I can't imagine it would be worth their while.

bodzilla02 12-13-2004 06:51 AM

You know, that sounds a little too familiar. Every freakin time I tried to get them to talk on the phone about the car, they ignored it. It seems like they don't really know anything about the car, and that whole over the amount bad check thing is sounding too right right now. I've known something wasn't right from the start, I just hope the bank can recognize this this morning when I go down there. I'm the type of person that likes to sorta get to know the person buying my cars so I know they'll treat it well and everything, and I could never do that with these people that's mainly how I knew something was up. I'll update you guys tonight when I get home from work with what the bank said.

Ok, update guys. I went to my bank today, and immediately they knew it was fraud, they took a photo copy of the check and told me to go to the cops about it, so that I did. I went to the station and talked to a cop, and as soon as I started explaining it he knew what I was talking about and told me about all of it that has been going on. I showed him the check and the copy of the last e-mail I got from them which included a name and address of them, he went around the corner for a minute, then came back and told me he was keeping those and a report was going to get filed. When I got home I talked to the FBI and explained everything that happened, then followed with a report with them. I will hopefully hear something back soon about what happened, but I just wanted to let you guys know. Thanks again for all your help with it all.

Send that bitch a mail bomb!!

Eric Happy Meal 12-14-2004 12:15 AM

im surprised the bank didnt call the police. simply because you might be a fraudulant check maker and your checking to see how well your product works.

Sinful7 12-14-2004 12:24 AM

Nah, he went there and was honest about it. There's no reason for him to worry.

Good job on the checking out! Sorry you didn't sell your car.

It will sell!! I'll pay off my eBay account someday here then put the car on there. I'll lower the price. Kinda ticked me off though... I was on eBay this afternoon and I saw a FD on there with a buy it now of $10,500... and that check was $10,400... yea you know what went through my mind lol I'm all set with that though, I would have been screwed.

And Eric, that's actually funny, I doubt they thought of it though, everyone at my bank knows me pretty well haha.

teknics 12-14-2004 05:21 AM

I CONCUR!!!

catch me if you can = great movie.
