I thought Porsche also did contract manufacturing on VW's and MB's?

i remember the early 90's 500E mercedes, the body was assembled by mercedes, trucked across town, to porsche who shoehorned (they bent the frame rails out to fit the motor!) the 5.0 v8 in there, then trucked back across town to mercedes to be painted, and finished.

Porsche started out as an engineering design/consultation firm that made its own cars to showcase what they were capable of. They still do, to an extent.



This contrasts with Lotus, which started out as some guy building racing cars, and today mainly does engineering consultation. They still make a car now and then as well, perhaps you've heard of some of their newer models.
