You will probably need.....I would say.....10 million.....20 million....probably even more. Dealerships make alot of there money through financing obviously, not on the actual sell of a vehicle. You can make money off of the "Processing Charge" which is total bullshit. That's all 100% profit, and depending on your location, it can range from 99-500 dollars. The processing charge the dealerships add on under the table, is what keeps alot of dealerships alive and still in business.
If you seriously want to look into owning a dealership, you will need first....experience working for a dealership. If you have not done this yet, go try it. You wil ******* hate it, trust me. Selling cars is a love and hate relationship. People can be the nicest person you ever met, or can be nasty.

i did some heavy research today...
its really not as hard as some might think. if your trying to open a honda or mazda dealership. then yeah, thats different. but a used car "mom and pop" dealship isnt all that complicated or pricey. im looking at a 30k start up price to be just about comfortable.
the worst part is all the paperwork to be filled out just to get a dealers licence. that part amazed me.

****- you dont even need a legitimate shop to sell used cars.
I did work for a guy who made a VERY good living off wholesale cars. He did not sell one single car to the public.
I am always turning cars over for a profit, if I devoted all my time to it I bet I could stop fixing boats and just sell cars- but I would rather work for a living

mom and pop dealerships are fine, but who is going to inspect your vehicles for you to insure they can be sold. alot of states require a safety inspection be done by a certified state inspector. it's alot of work, but I don't think you will really see a huge payoff for a couple of years.
there are a few around where I live that are run out of the owner's house. there inventory is in there front yard, but alot of them are very nice cars, ranging from 3k to 25k.

dealerships do pretty good here. plus, we dont have inspections. laws in florida are pretty lose for cars. i been looking into inporting a few from JDM land to get some noise going.
anyone ever import a car?

laws for used cars are in the consumers favor, once you get a complaint and the local DMV digs thier teeth into you

there are many different ways you can protect yourself with the whole "as-is" situation. and many ways you can screw yourself. if you follow the "rules" than you'll be ok. but the people out there that **** people over with lemons and trick them into thinking the car is something it isnt, then you deserved to get sued.

that's a good way of doing it honestly. go to auctions, buy the "popular" cars and go wild with it.
doing the import thing I would go for something different rather than the popular skylines, FD's. I would go with some Mini's, Aston Martin's, older muscle cars.
If i were to do what you are doing, I would put my focus on the muscle cars of the 60's and 70's. those will bring in more dollar than a import car ever will.

exactly...i been looking for a low cost mini. and i recently got a nova for cheap. but around here i know what sells. and i know whats sells quick. mainly the popular "street racing" cars. theres only one other dealer here that sells something in that catagory. but he's a complete rip off. im gonna try and steal his market. come and get'em ricers!
