34/5=6.8 According to the most authoritative information that I can find on the subject, the best results are achieved with a beer to worker ratio between 6 and 10, so you should be in good shape.

It seems adequate although I think optimum decision making takes place in the 7 to 8 range, at 6 there's too much arguing, at 10 there's not enough discussion, the idea just has to be suggested.

The ladies split a 12 pack, I had 3 (quit when I started getting a headache), my dad had at least 10, leaving 8-9 for my buddy. 2 other guys weren't drinking at all.

I'll tell ya, when you're working with these freakin' heavy-*** logs, and sometimes you need the positioned just the right way, it helps to have a 400 lb. guy on the crew.

Hopefully Ida doesn't make a complete mess of things, she's headed right this way.

Some crappy cell phone pics:

Looking down hill, second tier is going to get one more layer

Looking from the bottom, Edna and I shoveled all that dirt in there, used an iron rake to distribute/level

Edna's idea, to move dirt down to the first tier, we built a small dirt ramp for the wheelbarrow. You can also sort of see how the top tie of the first tier is incorporated into the bottom ties of the second tier:

Getting dirt to the lower portion, I used a board as a ramp to get the wheelbarrow high enough to dump. Notice the interlocking corner, and the hole left for the French drain.

Here is my original Google Sketch Up drawing (first time using this program, it's neat). The lines representing the railroad ties are not the correct size, and the ramp was just a general idea of where I'd like to add the steps, if we go that route. But we stayed pretty darn close to the original measurements, give or take 9" (the width of one tie).

Yeah, they were taken as dusk was setting in.

Finished filling in the first tier last night, tamped it all down. Left 3"-5" for top soil.

Used this (10"x10" tamper):

Though one of these would have been preferable:
