I have been running a little over 5 miles 3-4 times a week, starting last month. And my joints are fuckning killing me, what am I doing wrong? I was thinking maybe its my shoes, they are only $60 avias, maybe i should get some $120 nike airs? I haven't been warming up either, but I have been stretching before and after and cooling down. This **** is pissing me off cuz i went to work out tonight and I couldn't even run 3 laps cuz my ankle and one of my pelic joints hurt so bad. I have also been getting blisters on my feet, maybe because the new shoes aren't broken in? But i did have **** shoes for the first 2 weeks I ran, so im not too sure of the cause. I was also sick the last three days, maybe thats why my joints didn't recover?

I used to run, now I only run when chased.

Get good shoes, and DEFINITLY do some warm up stretches.

A little soreness is to be expected from a good work out, but blisters mean

change your shoes and maybe even your socks. Chances are if your feet are getting blisters your joints might be aching somewhat from the same cause.

It's funny... I SHOULD like it. Cause it's good for you, and I have to complete a 2 mile qualification twice a year...(2 miles in under 16 minutes..(Harder than you think being 5'6" @ 210lbs...) But I really hate running.. I enjoy it when I don't HAVE to do it. I like hiking and sports MUCH better.

Rob x-7 01-31-2003 09:05 PM

eh, I hiked 35 miles with 95 pounds on my back, it gets old fast.

I had a set of shoes that gave me blisters when i walked too much, it turned out they were too big and it was the friction of my foot sliding back and forth just a little bit when walking causing the blisters... i wonder if that could be the problem... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif

Many, many, many, MANY years ago, I ran track and cross-country. How old are you? Sick would set you back, even make your joints ache all by itself. Try taking a day or two off. Try taking glucosamine. It's supposed to build cartilage and stuff in your joints. And drink plenty of water.

Blisters are definitely a shoe fit problem. Try different, maybe thicker socks.

Good luck!

cueball1029 01-31-2003 09:17 PM

High quality shoes are a must. Nike is, in my opinion, are nothing but a name. Try to find a running store which specializes in running shoes. No Foot Lockers etc. because they are nothing but show and no help. On modern shoes there is almost no breakin time. The blisters could be either the shoes, socks chafing, or in my case they just happen. Soreness is to be expected expecially in the joints. Remember to ice and stretch. If you don't want to warm up before your run you could try to incorperate it into the run. For the first mile go slow and gradually pick up the pace. I tried to answer most of your questions, but I can try to answear anything else you might want to know.

Erik 01-31-2003 09:23 PM

are you running on pavement? a track? grass? I've played competitive tennis thru high school and college and always noticed my knees would hurt a bit when playing on pavement...as opposed to indoor cement, carpet, or clay. same back and forth running motion, but the pavement was so unforgiving...

also, if you've been keeping up the constant rhythm of running 3-4 times a week, i'd think your body would have adjusted to this new athletic activity...buuut, being that its cold maybe that has played a part in not letting your body get in shape as quickly as it would have if it was warmer out...

but maybe you are running indoor so temperature isn't a concern?

rx7machine 01-31-2003 09:57 PM

The only thing I do is sprint.. I'm too much of a lazy ass to put alot of effort into that much running..

1Revvin7 02-01-2003 11:48 AM

Well I'm 18, I run on a padded indoor track, and i am going to go out and spend atleast 120 on some good running shoes, porbably nike airs, word is they are the best. My shoes fit fine, socks are ****, I'm going to pick up some running socks, the xtra thick kind. Hopefully this will solve my problem, I training for a 10k in April, and plus I enjoy running, its fun kicking ur ass more and more each week, and the runners "high" is :bigok: .

j9fd3s 02-01-2003 12:24 PM

1Revvin7 02-01-2003 01:13 PM

yeah then you know you;ve gone for enough, but I am at the right weight to be running, 140lbs. When i used to run back in the day, I had no problems what so ever, i did have the best shoes on the market tho too.

BigTurbo74 02-01-2003 02:28 PM

u are just a bitch quit your complaining

1Revvin7 02-01-2003 02:42 PM

You can barely hit 2. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...>/blackeye.gif

1Revvin7 02-01-2003 11:18 PM

Well i went the cheaper route and bought some running soles and socks.

Cheers! 02-02-2003 12:49 AM

i have been running for around 5 years now... i'm 20

i do on average 10k a day for 5 days a week during the summer and tennis inbetween.

Ever since it got cold and i went to university and the stupid people and city do not plow sidewalks or roads i have been forced to run oin tread mills... ia te them... i do around 3 miles in 25 min session including cool down.

some musts are:

A.) good pair of shoes... i swear by Newbalance... the lighter the better and one that will not bend in the middle of the shoe. If you do a loto f pavement running... get a pair that has more padding on the ball and heal of the shoe... as aposed to more sprint type where only the heal has a little padding.

b.) don't buy nike airs... especailly foot locker ones... if u do get nikes goto running store and see what they ahve. FOOT Locker shoes are show only .

c.) if you have having blisters... an old tennis trick is to get a pair of your gfs.. old pantyhose... cut the thing off so that it is only ankle high. put those on... and then put your socks over it.

d.) you maybe able to get some of the aching out by taking some potassium before a run... a bannana... the aching maybe to due to the strain on the muscles near your knees... whcih will cuase you to compensate for them and take awkard strides

c.) make sure you do cool down and warm ups... start by going slow for atleast 2 mins... stop...s tretch... and build up speed...

when running don't run at continuous speeds all the time... start slow... go fast... slow fast... slow... that is more effective then trying to run at medium speed for 10kms vs slow and fast for 10kms.

d.) finally ! if it hurts stop! that means your body is hurt.. it needs time to heal... jogging is one of the most puinshing sports out there... each new stride means the body must stop itself and reacclerate it.

sorry for the long post

1Revvin7 02-02-2003 11:26 AM

thxs! I new there were some runners here. so why is it good to vary speeds? O yeah I'm about to pick up some new stuff, called Runners Advantage, anyone hear about this stuff? yea I always use the potassium trick.

cueball1029 02-02-2003 12:50 PM

One thing about the socks. Thicker doesn't mean better. It depends more on the material than thickness. My running socks are actually pretty thin.

AVAN 02-02-2003 05:07 PM

I ran xcountry back in high school, even got a scolarship for it huh go figure. anyway you probably hurt because of the cold weather but I think that it is good that you got new shoes. just one suggestion though, you should try to eat as many bannanas as you can so that you do not cramp up also do a cool down run and streatch when you are finished otherwise your muscles will become very tight :smirk:

BigTurbo74 02-02-2003 11:13 PM

wow finally some knowledge instead of ..." haha yeah i wish i could run" "damn i need to quit smoking" ect.

hey isn't 2 miles decent for a dude who weighs 50lbs more than you and hasn't ran since football freshman year? shut up bitch, how come i'm not sore

1Revvin7 02-03-2003 03:14 PM

cuz you only run 2 miles. I RUN 5! i haven't ran since 8th grade, ive been siting on the comp and racing cars, no physical activity what so ever, still # 1.

Cheers! 02-03-2003 03:51 PM

if you are looking to getting into shape it is better to run by cycling your speeds.

If you keep a constant speed, the body will begin to conserve energy so to speak, although if you just started running, any run will be pushing your body so don't worry. It is when you've ran everyday for a while then you realize you can't improve your time or pace anymore. THis is when u need to start to run at different speeds.

When you cycle you speeds you will be pushing your body more, sorry its kinda a weak explanation...

1Revvin7 02-03-2003 10:27 PM

yeah i got it, i will have to try that as soon as the race is over, after getting the new soles and socks, my joints no longer hurt, I also rested up. so :bigok:

Cheers! 02-03-2003 11:29 PM

hahaha, don't get it on the family jewels

foopy 02-04-2003 12:31 AM

dont get any shoes, get the shoes that match the pronation of your foot. your arches - or lackthereof - need proper support, or else too much stress is delivered to your ankles/knees/hips.

go to a good running shoe store, and the workers should be able to tell the condition of your feet, and what style sneaker fits you best.

New balance has the best choice, but i found mizunos are great too.

I have a foot problem, but I'm sure this would work for anyone: get custom made insoles...they fit your foot perfectly, and you can transfer them to most shoes (you can get sport or dress shoe type insoles). Mine have a lifetime gaurantee for the main support, but the neoprene-type covering can be refurbished for like $30. My first pair were $350 (not paid my insurance...those bastards), and they make adjustments for free.

cueball1029 02-04-2003 03:47 PM

I have mildly flat feet so I tend to overpronate when I run. I also got a pair of orthotics and they work like a charm. Kinda of expensive though.

75 Repu 02-04-2003 03:51 PM

OK, I am not a runner, I used to ride my bike and stuff but that was when I was still in high school.. Now I want to start running.. How the hell do I motivate myself.. I want to and sometimes I do go for a quick run to the beach.. Do I just need to want it, or do I have to try and be comfortable and get some headphones so I can listen to music while I run..? Basically how do I get into the habit..?

DJ Rotor 02-04-2003 04:03 PM

That is a good question and one I should be asking myself as well - I've tried to get into running but always got discouraged and quit - any ideas?
