define surface modelling....
surface modelling is basically where you define the edges and curves and a lofted surface is created between those outlines. it has no thickness (although one can sometimes be defined).

Programs using this are Alias, Rhino, 3D studio, Cobalt Solids

A Solid modelling program is where you create or extrude objects that begin as solids that you can then "shell" to create different wall thicknesses for certain parts. Some of these programs might be Solidworks, FormZ, Cobalt Solids, or Pro-E

so for instance, how did you make the fenders? were those lines created on offset planes and then a surface was created between those edges?

looks great...just curious as to how Zmodeler works

3dsmax4 has solids and mesh editing.....i can take a solid cube and use the program to widdle it into the shape of a car...in fact i did that for a stadium design project. I took a certain size cube and cut things out of it to define the structure. I then used mesh editing and object creation to add such details as seating etc....i could very well have sculpted the chairs out of blocks, but that all adds to the rendering time and the amount of information kept in the creation.
