I don't know much about engine swaps.. but should we make this a sticky?
|
motor mounts will most likely need to be replaced. at a minimum, the rear one.
check the harness, and make sure that it is in proper condition. upgrade the pump, trust me, you'll need it soon. new clutch, especially if you have a lot of miles..... vacuum hose, zip ties, and angled hose pliers.... there are plenty more.... |
you guys have no idea how many people ask me what you need to swap engines lol
|
-a case of 24...
-a friend with lots of tools and patience -a working car to run down to the local canadian tire (or autozone) for more parts and tools -a cordless phone to call people for help... ie where the hell does this little hose go? -and lots of bright light so u can see! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png |
Not to mention a big ass spliff to celebrate.

an understanding girfriend or wife who will take the "frustration Pounding" like a champ, when everything does not go your way....

I was going to say the cluth but I was beaten to it. It looks so much easier from the opposite end. :squint:

if its a non stock engine swap, make sure the throttle opens all the way

Wear those gloves that'll help protect your hands because believe me, YOU WILL HAVE THAM BANGED UP. I had bleeding knuckles for a week after I forced the 2.4 out of the Tempo. Have everything organized and ask questions before hand. Have your things planned out because the last thing you'll need is confusion after you're way to deep into the swap. I've done this twice and both times it wasn't pleasant. granted it wasn't an RX but still, a swap is a bitch if something goes wrong. Peace

new crush washers(ex*header washers, banjo bolt applications) don't reuse old ones
floor jack & stands Its a good idea to have the cooling sys. (oil & water) pro. flushed if not replacing w/ new Hayes manual, if not factory manual ORGANIZATION, this is essential |
honda engines are so easy to swap
|
Don't forget a full complement of fluids (Oil, anti-freeze, gear oil, power steering fluid, brake fluid, etc.)

anyone ever gotten the flywheel/e-shaft lock bolt off without using a flywheel stopper?
|
yes I used a impact with a 2 1/8" socket, came off after a second
don't forget to replace the pilot bearing and throw-out bearing regardless if you are changing clutch. Good music and beer are essential you'll probably want to replace the tranny mounts since your right there, and they work hand in hand with the motor mounts If you have time you might want to take off the oil cooler and dump the old oil out of it so your motor gets a fresh start we should make a sticky for the best way to break motors, used, or rebuild |

I always heat up the bolt with MAP gas (though propane also works), then put on my deep 19mm socket onto a 2 foot sears 3/4 breaker bar (nice piece!). Then, simply get a friend to bump the starter. (I use a remote starter trigger when at the shop alone). You can also set the breaker bar against the frame (driver's side!!!) and bump the key yourself. Obviously, you do this with the fan removed and make sure the engine can't start. Its the easiest way to go about it if you don't have a flywheel brake. Coincidentally, the Mazdatrix flywheel brakes are well worth the cash if you ever do more than one flywheel or e-shaft bolt removal. |
Get the flywheel stopper. It's worth it.
|
To add to the proper organization, i get the large ziplock bags and put all the loose parts in them. I label the bags with a black marker so i know exactly where everything came from. It sounds corny, but it works! Make sure to also get the proper tranny fluid oil. Also fuel filter, and fuel lines. Hope this helps some guys.

for those of us with no air compressor.....the makita electric impact has worked for me even with the gobbles of red loctite I use on that flywheel nut. impact with the right socket from sears and presto. Ive tried the snap-on electric impact and it just doesnt have the balls like the red makita. Takes that front bolt off with no hesitation also. Did we forget to mention the ice chest full of beer and driveway degreaser so the wife wont scream after you are done?
|
I'll add the red Makita electric impact to my shopping list... thanks. By the way, so true about the screaming wife, I feel your pain.
Thanks, SikeoneR |
I recently Swapped Flywheels.I used a 3/4 inch Drive Breaker bar(about 3 feet..42 inches?),and a 54 mm socket. We strapped the Engine to a Pallet.I put a piece of chain on One of the Flywheel bolts, and then To another Bolt through the rear of the engine. One guy Held the Engine a little more Steady, while I put the bar at the "NINE-Ten O'clock" position.I then JUMPED on the bar!..about 3-4 tries and It Loosened up..It sucks when you have no Air tools and you are doing this in the middle of your Driveway,BUT if you have the Ingenuity,You can accomplish anything..
|
i would do a new pilot bearing and pilot seal
|
