i am new to nopistons and have been searching around for info on installing a rotary in my 1949 willys jeep. my old flathead 4 cyl. is getting tired and i thought what cooler swap than a rotary. i am having problems finding info on the torque curves of a rotary. any help?

Travisty 07-29-2003 10:49 AM

what torque curve more like it.

as cool as it would be to see a willy with a 13b it doesnt sound like it would work well for offroading. with low torque outputs rock crawling sounds like a challenge.... i could be wrong though.

sounds like a cool project and hopefully someone here can help you out

49willy 07-29-2003 10:57 AM

well my old flathead has about 69 horses and about 70 ft lbs of torque and it crawls well. its all about low gears to bring the torque up. i think a rotary should be able to match or exceed those numbers dont you think?

isamu 07-29-2003 11:02 AM

It would definitely be unique. I think it would be fun out on the sand dunes or in the mud.

Travisty 07-29-2003 11:07 AM

yeah you can do better than that definitely.

that should be pretty sweet once you get it going.

I want one.. My grandfather used to have one in Nicaragua, Still runs to this day..

49willy 07-29-2003 11:12 AM

now my next problem. i need to find a print or drawing on the bolt pattern for the tranny end of the rotary bell housing. i need to have an adapter built to connect to my t-90 trans. any ideas where i can find one?

75 Repu 07-29-2003 11:20 AM

You could probably just go to a local junkyard and get a bell housing. depending on your location, you might find lots or rx7's at the junkyard..

j9fd3s 07-29-2003 11:24 AM

the rotary has a pretty flat tork curve, the 86-88 non turbos have 146hp@6500 and 133lbsft@4000? of tork

We put a Pinto engine in a willys once

49willy 07-29-2003 11:57 AM

yeah a pinto engine was my first thought but that seemed too generic. besides a rotary makes my nuts tingle.

How can you argue with that? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

This needs to go in someones sig.. I like this new guy..

phinsup 07-29-2003 01:05 PM

Try advance adapters, they have a lot of adapters to the t-90 or for any jeep swap for that matter. I dunno about rotary though.

Sounds like a pretty sweet swap. Welcome aboard!

49willy 07-29-2003 01:39 PM

does anyone know if mazda (the company) is any help with providing technical info for engine swaps?

No I doubt they have any interest in it. If you wanna buy a new RX-8 though they will answer any of your questions LOL

49willy 07-29-2003 01:46 PM

if i bought a new rx8 i wouldnt have any time to work on my jeep anyway https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683473.gif

phinsup 07-29-2003 01:48 PM

Mazda is ok with that. LOL

rx7machine 07-29-2003 09:59 PM

JUST DONT WATCH MONSTER GARAGE OR TAKE ANY SUGGESTIONS FROM JESSE JAMES FOR SUGGESTIONS ON MAKING OFF-ROAD ROTARIES...

they have a tendency to turn to swiss cheese with over 10,000+ bullet holes

The bell housing is less of a problem, then the input shaft of the tranny, because if it is to small for the rotary's pilot bearing, then I don't know what you would do. But if if is bigger you could have it turned down, although that would require taking the tranny apart.

Or will it fit snugly into the pilot bearing???

Actually, there are plenty of off roading rotaries out there. The Sami guys love'em.

A quick Google search:

I'm sure you could find more.

As far as the trans adaptor, perhaps these guys could help you out.

I've never looked under a willys but if it has a divorced transfer you could use a mazda trans and then make your own short driveshaft to it.

since this will be a custom job anyway you could always swap the transfer out of a suzuki samari also

BALDBEAS 08-06-2003 05:14 PM

you could always use a dana 300 transfer. they have the ability to use 2 hi and low, and 4 hi and low, just like your stock trannsfer and it is a divorced type tranfer. I have a 47 willies that i've thought about doing that to some day after college.

49willy 08-08-2003 04:25 PM

the prob with a dana 300 is that the rear drive output is for a centered differential. both the differentials on the willys are on the passenger side. this makes for extreme driveline angles on the rear driveshaft. i guess if i swap in a new rear axle i could do it. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR

Re: 13b Willys Jeep

I know this is an ancient thread but….. I have done what the Original poster was talking about and it’s awesome! I put an S5 13b in my ww2 army jeep and it rips. I’ve put over 3000 miles on it. I’ve rock crawled… done road trips and daily driven it. Rotaries are actually really good for Jeeps if you make the right gearing mods. i documented everything and have lots of videos and pictures if you guys want to see more.
