Thumbs up

Ok been skimming just about as many topics as i can in these forums learning everything i can about my future car, 93 touring rx-7, and one thing i've come upon is the "3 mods then ecu" type saying. I've seen it a few times and figured i should get some more in-depth answer to this.

Would it be good to put an ECU on as the first "big mod"? By big mod i mean after i do the fan mod, change the hoses, replace the ast with an aluminum one, get a few important gauges, re-ground my engine, and change all the fluids.

So far on my "big mod" list is only what everyone else would consider a minor mod, mainly a nice downpipe, an air intake system, and maybe a cat-back exhaust, and not really a mod but im also planning on getting an apexi avc-r.

But i figure, why threaten my engine by waiting to get the ECU if i can get it first and not lose performance?

-------

so to cut to the chase is it ok to have an ECU be my first real mod, or does it require me to have other mods installed?

thanks in advance, oh yea in case i missed any "small reliability mods" in my list let me know as i've been working hard to compile a nice list of things to do right away.

it depends on what ecu, the power fc is a great first mod, it will make your stock car run 100% better but if you get a chipped ecu, it is tuned for more airflow than you have and run rich(er). any other stand alone is like that too, a haltech requires rewiring the whole engine, and if you have it apart already....

best place to purchase a power fc and the power fc commander thing?

what kind of improvement can i get with that being my first mod? (although ill probably get the downpipe first to sort of make myself comfortable with the inside of the engine)

yea im going with the "let's not blow up the engine" strategy, my plan of things to get before i go into the "more power" mods is as follows and i believe it will save me the trouble of being one of the guys who says "it sounded fine but then blew up", because one thing i learned from you guys here is that preventitive maintenance is better then engine replacement anyway to my list:

boost gauge, compression gauge, water temp gauge, fan mod, change fluis, silicone hose, hyperground kit, aluminum ast, koyo radiator, apex'i avc-r, apex'i power fc and commander, turbo timer, and eventually the FJO or TechEdge wideband o2 sensor.

I think that covers my *** with a lead blanket pretty much, even though it may take time to get to my power mods, once i get there i will be able to get the full potential without threatening the engine.

Back to the ecu...any reccomendations as to where to grab the power fc and commander for a decent price tag?

thanks again guys this forumn ROCKS,

kevin

hmm just read on apexi.com that the power fc is for off-road use only "no OBDII" or something

does this mean i can't pass inspection with the power fc or what do i have to do?
