Tranny Pull Help
Hey NP:
Just got my FD on Friday. I need to take the tranny off so I can give it to my friend/fd mechanic who'll replace the syncros for me. I'm not a very experienced mechanic, most of my tool time is working on my 240sx and helping one of the other board member's pull an FD engine.
First, I did what any new FD owner does - purchase good jackstands.
Then I did my second mod, get the car off the ground.

When I drained the tranny I found evidence of the stripped syncros

My question is this:
If I need to get the tranny off, other than unbolting the starter and tranny bell housing bolts, how much do I need to take off? In the top of this picture in the foreground is a set of bolts that holds the tranny together right before it meets the driveshaft. Can I unbolt here and drop it off, or do I need this off as well?

Thanks,
Kevin

7 bolts hold the tranny to the motor including the two that go through the starter. The clutch slave also has to be unbolted from the trans. Other than that, the cat, shields under the car, ppf, and drive shaft. Don't forget to take the shifter out from the inside of the car. Also, the fd uses a pull-type clutch so you will need to know how to release it.

what ihor said and this to seperate the tranny from the throwout bearing.
Remove starter
Remove both inspection plates on the bellhousing.
Remove the clutch slave and let it dangle by the line.
Stick your hand in the top inspection hole and pull back on the release fork.
While holding it like that, look in the lower hole with a light and you should see that the collar is pressed into the pressure plate now.
Stick a long flathead screwdriver in there between the bearing and the collar... while releasing the pulling force on the release fork with your other hand. The collar will stay in the pressure plate, and the release bearing will come out of it.
If you do this right, it should be disconnected.

To add a bit to the above. There are a couple of braces that go over the tranny tunnell that have to be taking off aswell. You will need an impact gun to get the power plant frame bolts off. You also have to take the midpipe out. Unbolt the driveshaft from the diff, 4 bolts, and it will slide right out of the tranny.
As you can see this forum is very helpfull. Good people. Don't be afraid to call me if you need to Kevin. Keep in mind I have had the entire drivetrain out of that car several times. Although Im not touching a single bolt on it again.

Thanks Brad. I think I figured out why the dash lights don't work, but that's another weekend project. I'll be shooting you a PM to ask about taking the dash apart (first time's a pita in every car). I think you either messed up a ground or at least a factory illumination wire.
Thanks again for the help people.

Real men don't need an impact gun to get that off.
