Hey guys, I have been rolling on the stock clutch for a little while now and it is starting to revolt. It does not like the upgraded power. Mods are in the sig.

I was just wondering if anybody could make a suggestion on what to get, or just tell me what clutch you are running, it would be greatly appreciated. It is used mostly on the street. I go to the drag strip about twice a month, with the occasional autoX mixed in too.

TIA.

Ive put on a ACT cluth on my FD. Didn't have any problems with it and loved it. Now I have to put another one on my new car and plan on putting a ACT S/S clutch. If you are looking for mostly street driving and take chicks out in the car....get a sprung clutch. Girls dont really like the jerkyness of an unsprung clutch.

Good call on the girly factor. Thanks man. LOL. The damn thing can be violent with the stock clutch too (when I get on the throttle). https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

ACT Xtreme pressure plate with Street/Strip disk. Not harsh at all. Its got a harder pedal but it should last a good long while.

I just put on the act ss clutch and pressure plate (about 500 miles ago). Since my stock clutch was dying (slipping over 5000 rpms), it made an incredable difference. I drive the car every day and once I got used to it, the stiffness is no problem at all (even for driving the ladies around). I think the clutch is good for about 400 ft-lbs of torque, so it should be able to handle you mods just fine. I also put on the RB 12 lb flywheel. If your changing your clutch you might as well change the flywheel too (If you have the funds). I couldn't believe the difference this made. The car accelerates like crazy in 1st gear, and has overall more throttle response.

get a twin plate!

Thats good to hear. I am putting in a new clutch and planned on getting a new flywheel too. But I was looking at the SP 9lb. Might be too light and harsh but I already got a girl https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

I've heard good things about centerforce.

Am I the only one who likes harder pedal feel on a clutch, I can't stand a soft clutch.

The RB is actually 8.5 lbs https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png . It's the counterweight that totals the whole thing to 12 lbs. I'm sure it's the same weight as the SP 9lb one. I'd say go with the RB one simply b/c vendors usually sell these with the act ss clutch as a combo... you save only a little $$, but everything counts with these cars.

Unless you are road racing stick with the stock flywheel. It ain't worth all that extra money to get an aluminum one

why do you say that? I noticed a huge difference in my cars performace with the aluminum FW.

Thats what I have heard too! lol.

Twin plate is nice, but it hurts the wallet. Hard petal or soft makes no differance to me.... as long as it can grip. I am going to do the flywheel also. I have heard that the 9lb'er is "fun" to drive, so I will find out in about a week. I thinking of going with the ACT HD PP with the s/s disc. Figure I will need to get the good stuff. Should be going single turbo in 6 months or so. Nothing crazy, 425rwhp or so. That clutch be able to hold it, right?

Thanks for the replies. You guys are awesome.

Centerforce doesn't seam to last on the fd. It also doesn't have those weights that the advertise because the fd has a pull-type clutch. The ss works well for cars making 400 hp or less. Beyond that you'll need the extreme.

It may be *fun* to drive a lightweight flywheel, but for drag racing you want the extra mass of the stock flywheel. Also the aluminum flywheel can warp if you abuse it too much...basically I rather spend the $500 on a water injection setup or something else cool that will make more power

yeah, I didn't read the "go to the drag strip twice a month" part of the original post... I agree that a lightweight flywheel is no good for hard launches.

RX7tuner 11-03-2003 01:08 AM

I have the centerforce currently and do not like it. The pedal is too soft and slips too much during hard launches. I am soon going to go back to an ACT s/s clutch, which I never had any problems with.

Silver Ninety Three 11-03-2003 11:05 PM

I dunno, asfter having a lightweight flyhweel I'd never go back to stock. The car just revs soooo slow! Every time I test drive a customer's car and it has a stock flywheel I'm like %#@%^%^! Can't rev match properly. I've had my M2 9.5 lb for like 3 years now and 35k miles. Just recently I had to replace the friction surface on it.
