Wassup fellas!
First time poster here.
Im thinking about buying an Rx7 over an Mr2 Turbo. I just need some imformation about the 7 like what problems im gonna run into. How to maintain the car, how to fix commom probs.
okay, with those questions out of the way, i have heard the 7 is unreliable like no other. I love the looks and the ergos inside, im 5'9 , and almost everything about it.
You guys have a great forum going on here. Any help would be deeply appreciated. Thanks a bunch

What year rx7?
Most reliability issues go away with a couple mods and regulaur maitanence. Rotary motors are so simple that they are kindof hard to mess up unless you detonate them.
A boost controller is evidently more responsability than some of these people that drive can handle. Most 7's will drive forever in stock/slightly modified trim, but rarely do they stay stock.
Modding isn't the problem, allocation of mods is.

What are the usual problems with a 93 that differs from a 94 from a 95?
Is there a year i should stay away from? What could i do to make a 7 as reliable as a honda ( w/ regualr maintanence of course). Also, whats the safest way to make 400HP at the wheels? biggger turbo? more rotors? how would you go about doing those upgrades?

Like you, I want "400hp" (why? It just sounds good, also was what I was going to have in the Supra...400rwhp anyways). But, you should remember, the Rx7 does a lot with very little. To get something around 320-350 rwhp simply requires more boost....but more boost requires more fuel (Injectors), ecu, catback, dp. Other mods like IC and an engine port job can help too! But wait for those questions after you've bought and "made reliable" your own Rx7....
As for difference in years, the 93's have had a known 5th gear synchro problem, and the later years had better paint (I think?).
Read read read! There's a lot to be known! Don't let some of the weirdo's here scare you away! Remember, it's the car that you love...not the weird driver's in shiny pants!
*Edit, just noticed you said 400hp "at the wheels"..for that..requires more tuning/boost but better off with a single (cleaner engine bay too!). Not sure though since my aim is 400"HP" meaning 330+RWHP.*

i would go with touring model because i am pretty sure that the r1 and r2 dont have cruise control and some other conveniences. best way to make reliable hp is single turbo upgrade and a good port job

How much money would i have to invest into the 7 to get it reliable? Estimated. including labor costs.
Also... I think the cwest kit looks pretty bangin. Has anyone put one on their car yet? how much is paint and labor?

to get a reliable 7 your gonna spend...assuming u buy a stock FD...at least well...
radiator $4-500
Aluminum AST $140ish
Downpipe $150-400ish
boost guage and pod $100ish
probable vac hose job $100ish
at least modifying the stock air box $100-400
comes to around $1600-1700ish
OHHHHHHH and labor, god knows, a TON if you go to a regular auto shop who probably won't even do the work for you and tell you they can't because they don't know how anything on the car works.
general rule of thumb, don't go to a non-rx7 shop if it requires direct work on the engine or turbo system, or requires them to dismantle either of those, they will break them and you will go broke...brake work, exhaust work, etc shouldn't be a problem....
I think thats close to it for the basic reliability mods
BUT if you want near 400rwhp, which in my opinion will never be as "reliable as a honda" (probably not even close), you'll be spending thousands more...at least another $7500
400hp will require you to get a reprogramable ecu, which is pretty hard to tune without blowing your engine if you've never done it or don't know anyone with experience with it.
I know i've missed some things, but basically, 400hp is alittle unrealistic if you haven't owned one and know nothing about them...especially because your probably going to be doing the work yourself unless you have a ton of money and live near an rx7 shop. I would say around 300-350hp is pretty realistic if you read A TON.... these sites are very helpful and so is this forum

oh and about the cwest kit...too many of em, stick with the stock look, OR go with the 99-spec cause thats awesome....
paint job depends on who you get to do it, at least 1000

JDM it. Paint and labor can be pricey, all depends who does it.
A Body kit should NOT be your first concern with an FD though bro..
