well, i am having problems getting my third gen started. When i turn the key it tries to crank and turn over, but it just won't start. You can smell a little bit of gas when turning the key. If I push start the car, it will run fine. I have no idea what this could be. Any suggestions?

Thanks

It sounds like it's flooded. This page is for 2nd gen's, but the main idea still applies:

Have you tried holding the accelerator pedal down to the floor when you start it?

RussellTT94 07-17-2002 08:13 PM

i didnt think it would flood everyday. thanks for the link though, i will give it a try

Try giving us more dteails on when this happens: All the time, cold hot, etc.

turbovr6 07-17-2002 08:50 PM

how many miles on the car? It could be a sign of low compression :(

phinsup 07-17-2002 08:51 PM

leaky injectors?

RussellTT94 07-17-2002 08:58 PM

it just seems to randomly happen. one day, the car will start in the morning, but not when i leave work in the evening. the next day, it won't start in the morning, but will the rest of the day. The car just turned 50k last week.

It's possible that you have some sort of loose connection, but it's hard to tell. No check engine light?

phinsup 07-17-2002 09:00 PM

it's cranking over, just not starting right?

RussellTT94 07-17-2002 09:07 PM

no check engine light. yeah phin, cranks over, just won't start.

phinsup 07-17-2002 09:09 PM

What do you have to do to finally get it started, just keep cranking?

RussellTT94 07-17-2002 09:20 PM

to finally get it started, i have to push start it. which is getting old real quick.

but after i push start it once, it will crank the rest of the day.

phinsup 07-17-2002 09:22 PM

Damn that really sounds like my 89 when the injectors were leaking, but I am not sure if the symptoms are the same on the 93+??? anyone?

9BASE3 07-18-2002 06:50 AM

Starter?

RussellTT94 07-18-2002 10:03 AM

well, it wouldn't start again this morning. tried the unflooding procedure, then said **** it and drove my roomate's car to class.

phinsup 07-18-2002 10:08 AM

That ain't right.

turbovr6 07-18-2002 12:45 PM

thats odd, if you push start and it works fine then the ignition /fuel system sounds like it is working fine.

Are you sure ther starter is actually engaing the flywheel? If the bendix gear is shot, the starter motor itself will spin and you will hear it, but the gear does'nt come out to engage the flywheel. Nex time it happens, have someone standing looking at your engine, see if all the belts on the engine move while cranking...

RussellTT94 07-18-2002 01:39 PM

talked to dave at KD today............. he thinks it is low compression. that made my day https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...>/rolleyes.gif gonna do a compression test this weekend.

damn i am glad that i bought a s13 last week.

just tried to start it and all the belts and pulleys moved

vosko 07-18-2002 01:48 PM

i'm gonna say.... leaky fuel injectors or low compression. might be time for the ATF trick https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

I had this **** today: started the engine and moved some meters just to have a better psition for a wheel-change. switched the car off and when I switched it on again it idled for some seconds and went off. now I can't start it any more. help

dom 03-05-2003 04:14 AM

ok, have tried the fuse box method but it still doesn't start. will put out the plugs now. isn't it better to use motor oil on them than the ATF?

FlameThrowingRotary 03-05-2003 08:45 PM

I had the same problem in my car but only if I went a day without starting it. I woudl just turn and turn but no fire until finally it'd start and blow a tone of smoke out for a few sec. I replaced my spark plugs and the problem goes away. I burn really rich anyway becasue of the fuel pump and go through spark plugs pretty often and it always happens when they've been in there a while. Try doing a tune up and see if it works for ya.

dom 03-06-2003 08:28 AM

Yeah, I took out my spark plugs today and it's no wonder the car didn't start. About 1mm of coal on 'em. I am running rich though. Now I ordered '9 NGK Racing plugs which will be here by tomorrow. I'm sure the problem will be gone. Thanks!

dom 03-06-2003 08:31 AM

Hey flame thrower. I have pretty much the same set up like you. Only that I use the Apexi front mount i/c. Have you done a dyno yet? What boost are you running? Base maps?? Thanks

FlameThrowingRotary 03-10-2003 05:47 PM

Nah I havn't done a dyno on it yet, Waiting till I throw on all the parts to finish it to get it tuned. I'm still running a little over stock like 11.5. I dotn know what maps I have running, Pro-Tech programed my power fc for my car. When I finish off the performance mods i'll let ya know what numbers I got.
