I was driving back to my dorm tonight when all of a sudden my car started running like crap. I was stopped waiting for traffic to clear so I could make a left turn, the last car passed and then when I started to go, it ran just fine at first and then suddenly went to crap. The idle is crappy and it runs really rough all the time. When I step on the gas a tiny bit, it feels like it wants to die. Same thing when I try to make move. At idle my A/F gauge reads about as lean as it can go, and when I give it gas, it jumps all over the place so fast it looks like the entire gauge is lit up. I think it might be a vacuum leak but I'm not sure. I'm taking it apart tomorrow to hopefully fix it.

Does any have any ideas what it might be? It doesn't sound like a blown apex seal does it? Well thanks for the help. I'll let you know if I find anything out tomorrow.

It's the little black box attached to the firewall behind the intake elbow. Check to see if the vacuum hose from underneath has come loose.

I concur with the map sensor problem. When I blew an apex seal it idled like crap but it ran ok at higher RPM - anything over 1800 or so.

It wasn't that, I took the intake manifold off and there were two hoses behind it the had blown off. I put those back on, and drove it home (about 47 miles). Well most of the way home, It started being weird again about 3/4th of the way home. It seemed to be fine if I floored it, good and rich except it was really lacking power WOT was barely able to maintain speed, but if I let off the gas very much at all the air/fuel mixture would shoot all over the place again. I got to my exit off of I-5 and it died. I was able to coast to about three blocks from my house, where I pulled off the road abd tried to start it, but that didn't work. I managed to push it home and was looking at it today. We're trying to figure out why it won't start. We checked the fuel pump and that works, and I managed to get the fuel filter out, but didn't get to check that. I'm just going to buy a new one and put that in. We checked the spark plugs and their fine, I'm getting good spark ( I just replaced them and the spark plug wires). Any ideas what to check next?

Also what does it feel like when you blow an apex seal? The inside of my exhaust tips are white so that means I was running really lean and I'm afraid I might have fried one. Thanks a ton.

you cant just floor a car after you reconnect a vac hose, cuz the ecu learns (as per dont be a rikki) get a compression check, and make sure you're making compression on both rotors.

the feeling of a blown motor depends on how you blew it. i've blown 2 rotor once and the car will not start no matter what you do to it, and if you just blow 1 rotor, your motor will start and run, but really shitty, and it will sputter and shoot flames. then again, that will be the same symptoms if one rotor has bad plugs.

get a compression test and start from there

true dat man...i would take it to a pro if i were you. did you have a the vacuum hoses replaced with silicone ones?

like the rest of the guys say Check the compression.

BTW guys how do you know if your Apex finally give out, i have 85k miles on my stock motor and the idle boost level is at -10 or vacuum at 10 on my boost guage. i have moments till my seals give out.

i think compression check would be the easiest way to know if you most likely have a broken seal(s) ..... you can always take your exhaust manifold off and check with a flashlight or take the engine apart .. hehe
