I've been drooling over 3rd gen rx7's for a long time, just never considered buying one b/c they are only 2 seaters. Well, i've changed my mind and decided to get my dream car! And i couldn't be more excited. However, as I do know a lot about volvos ( ) i don't know squat about rotary engines. Turbos aren't a problem, but could anyone explain some key things to check when purchasing a turbo rx7? I'm looking at spending between 15-18k and expect that an rx7 at that price will have a new engine and tranny, and excelent interior (correct?). Thanks in advance guys, and hopefully soon i'll be posting my pics up in the members ride thread. I'm hopefully going to purchase the car within 30-45 days.

check for good compression on engine

transmission shifts into all gears easily

suspension does not knock

check for maintenance history, wrecks, recalls, and engine/turbo replacement if necessary

interior is in decent condition, some panels and snaps are notorious for breaking and the car is 10yrs old.....

do you want a modded car or a mostly stock one.....???? the list and questions go on for miles...

I would like to get a mostly stock car, i don't want someone elses failed project .

'check for maintenance history, wrecks, recalls, and engine/turbo replacement if necessary'

- all the rx7s i've seen that were selling for over 13k had new engines, so hopefully that won't be a problem, as i've heard these engines dont' have much of a long life.

Thanks for the help, anything else thats important? Whats the difference between the touring and normal rx7?

a touring is a car that had a sunroof, cruise control, bose sound system, and leather interior. blahblah

a r1 has NO sunroof, and has a suede interior, different spring rates, and has a standard wing and a lower front lip for extra cooling to the 1st oil cooler and an additional oil cooler......the r1 has no cruise......and some other **** that i forgot about.....

Ok, well i definetly want leather interior....the sunroof would be nice on dates, and cruise control is a must. So I guess i'm looking for a 1993 touring turbo rx7.

Fd3boost, thank you guys are great, this is only my 3rd post and i feel wanted hehe. Anywho, I hardly see rx7s around my area (i live in san jose, ca...bay area) So i'll probably have to purchase off ebay . Unless anyone has any good resources for the bay area. I already sent in a request to vehix, but it only got sent to 2 dealerships, and still no reply .

So I go tell a few friends that I will hopefully be buying a rx7 soon.....what do i hear.... "those cares are nothing but trouble" "you're going to be working on it every weekend" "don't let the motor blow up on you!" ...sigh, Im still getting one despite these rumors, I can't see how if I didn't maintain the engine well it would have any problems at under 100k miles (im hoping to find one w/ 0-5k miles on a new engine).
