RX8 Gearbox in Rx7
#11
I looked into this post as I had been considering the FE's 6 in a FC. I would likely run into the same problems being discussed in this thread.
I know someone who builds transmissions and (like Signal) have alredy considered a cutom ratio in my 5. After reading into this topic, that seems to be the way to go. I have also been considering having my transmission rebuilt with only a higher second gear ratio to drive like a 4 speed. Even with an FC (less than 200 hp) 1st gear just seems like a waste when driving in traffic.
I was wanting to do this for mileage (not power) since I drive a N/A FC, which has much less hp than an FD. I found when on the flats a 2nd gear start was possible giving me about 2 miles per gallon when done frequently. There's just not quite enough gear.
I ran my 7 at the local track once. I was disappointed, but later thought a second gear clutch dump would have given me a better time. A higher ratio in second gear might also help the time. Imagine one shift to get through the 1/4 mile. That's a 1/4 mile for an FC (not an FD) which couldn't possibly redline 3rd.
With the transmission rebuilt with a higher second gear ratio it could be driven like a 4 speed.
