Hi! i'm planning to buy a rx7 fd soon, but a lot of people are telling me that they are ****, always break, bad engine, capricious, etc.

however, my passion for this car is so big that I'm still considering buying one

so, what i'm really asking in this post is:

-what do I have to check when buying a 1992 FD

-what are the special cares that I have to take with this car

-what do I have to change when I get it

-are they really THAT bad?

thanks

When buying a fd, and you wont find any 92 models. You can get 93, 94 or 95. They might have a build date of 1992 on the sticker but the earliest models are considered 1993.

You want to check the engine compression. I would test drive the car and make sure the turbos are boosting properly. 10-8-10. Look for oil leaks around the oil pan or rear main seal. Make sure it starts easily when cold. Pressure test the coolant system if you can too. Other than that just the regular stuff you look at on a used car like all the lights and buttons working etc.

You might be able to find a decent car for $15000. Keep in mind that your looking at buying a 14 year old car. There are going to problems you might run into. FD's are great when the are set up right, which keep in mind take a whole lot of money. A used one that is not set up right may not be the most reliable transportation. I would not recommend one to a teenager looking for transportation.

If I were you I would save your money for something else.

Im sure you can get a very nice fd for 15k especially importing them from Japan where they are much cheaper however it might be nice to have more money as a cushion in case something major needs fixing/replacing/rebuiding. also do you have a place to work on this car YOURSELF? if theres no one familiar with RX7's in your area guess what, you will need to do all the work on your car yourself and I hope you have the space/tools/time to do so or I would not recommend you buying an FD, if you are new to rx7's buying a Turbo II rx-7 is a much better idea.

im 18, worked my *** off bought one with 35k miles on the engine and turbos...its been reliable and never left me stranded i daily drive it BUT i have had to do a TON of learning and almost life dedication to modify this car while maintaining reliabilty factor....ive performed every reliabilty mod possible even though the car ran perfect when i bought it

about 2 months after purchasing the car....it starts dripping coolant while running

i panic'd not knowing what to do or having worked on it i was too scared to remove the underpanel or do anything as it was my first real sports car...so i freaked out and paid 180 bucks to have a damn radiator hose replaced

then i started learning some more about the car and getting comfortable underneith it and working around it...changed plugs oil thats about it

month or two later the car starts smoking really bad under the hood found out it was front cover gasket leak costs me 1200 fixed at a shop....

--now after lots of research i do all of my own work...this weekend i just pulled the injectors flushed coolant and am working on recalibrating the TPS.....if you are willing and able to LEARN how to be ur own mechanic realizing that NO ONE knows your car and you have willing to stick it out and not give up when a hose breaks then you may consider buying it but I must warn you it is definately alot of work and for most teenager and every kid I know could not handle the responsibilty as i do

thanks for all of your answers!

but if you consider that:

-I have a place to work on the car

-I have some money left after buying the car for basic reparations and reliability modifications

-I have a daily (my legs )

is it a good choice?

and last question, is it possible for an average guy like me, to learn how to work on and repair a rotary engine by himself? with forums and everything on internet, but with nothing else?

There are some third gen guys in Montreal, some bring their cars as far as Toronto for custom stuff.

You can find service manuals, rebuild videos, how too's and all sorts of stuff on the web. Search around the forum first, we've put up a lot of links to reference material.

I can tell you right now you may regret your choice come winter, if this is going to be your only vehicle. I would look at something newer you won't mind driving year round.

Just keep in mind that a fd3 will need lots of attention and possibly lots of dinero. It's not the smartest choice for a young guy's primary mode of transport but it sure makes for a great toy if you want to play.
