A Quandary
Hey everyone,
I have been the proud owner of my 2nd gen for three years now, through sickness, and in health... And I am absolutely hooked... So, I am planning on getting a 3rd gen relatively soon. I've been looking at them for well over a year now, and have a pretty good idea of what to look for, and what to avoid, and am contemplating 1 of 2 options for the purchase of my next car. 1.) A bone stock, pampered 7 that has relatively low miles, or 2.) A 7 that isn't so pampered w/ a blown engine, so long as the interior is excellent. I can do any and all work myself, and have access to some pretty sick shops here at my school. So, I am just curious on what the costs, and rewards are of each option, especially w/ regards to the 10 years of technical improvement that can be applied to the drivetrain.
Thanks,
Eric

i guess i would really depend on the cost difference, one thing to consider is if you get the motor rebuilt with a reputable builder you'll have a warranty on the engine, where you wont with the running one, no matter how pampered, who knows wut could happen.
That is a very good point. As I have never had a motor professionally rebuilt, can you work with the company and have engines built to your own spec, ie. adding renesis rotors, or other internals, or would that null warranties. And what about the turbos, will they need rebuilt/ overhauled at the same time, or are they a little more solid
Being that you have never owned a 3rd gen and have no idea what to expect. I would suggest buying a car that is in perfect working order. If you are having money issues and can not afford to do that then in all honesty you probably can not afford to get a fucked up one running properly. Just my thoughs.
That is definitely a very valid point Boost, and I may not know the intricacies of a 3rd. gen. However, I do know cars, and though I haven't done much performance wise to my 7, I have gotten to know it pretty damn well from just fixing problems that have arisen over 20 years of (ab)use. And sure, I want to save money wherever I can, but I won't have a problem buying/building a 3rd gen to the level of stock. Best case, a perfect seven with low miles would be, what, 12-14k, where one that is a little worse for wear would be more in the 6-ish zone. That difference easily covers a rebuilt/new motor, and quite a few other possible goodies. Plus, I will have gained a pretty decent working knowledge of the car.
Thanks for your time,
Eric

You would have to be very lucky to get a running FD in the 6ish's....a car with a blown motor will go for that. You may find a 93 modded in that price range but the truly stock one's lightly used will be higher/
