Check this out. If you read Sport Compact Car you'll recognize it. They painted this car with flat black spray paint. Less than $50 including paint and masking materials I believe they said.

It looks good on the outside of the car, I think it would look great under the hood.
Since you can see the back of our fender liners and most of the rest of the paint is covered up by more important stuff, why spend lots of money so your shock towers look shiny? Personally I think the flat black will allow the engine and other polished stuff to draw the eye better when people look under the hood.
