The fill plug on my car is mangled pretty bad. It doesn't remotely resemble a 3/8ths square any more. I'm trying to fill the tranny via the shifter but I've disassembled the top half and it doesn't seem to be draining into the tranny - what am I doing wrong?

you're trying to fill through the shifter, thats whats wrong.

get a pair of vice grips, or pipe wrench and try to get the plug out

Wow... now that sucked. Hmm... the 3/8ths drive doesn't fit because it's a torx bit that's supposed to go in there

edit: oh yeah, thanks turbovr6!
