I’m in the market for replacing the stock intercooler, at last! Running efini twins, with Y piping, A’pexi intake Power FC, downpipe, 3” cat, and racing beat cat back. Thinking about a resonating midpipe from www.rx-7store.net but don’t want it to be loud. Just got to an acceptable level with the racing beat muffler, had A’pexi N1 and hated it. I also live in Florida, hot, hot, hot, on the interstate at 70 at noon with AC on it runs at 95°C. In moving roadblocks it can go to 105°C. As you can see temperature is a concern of mine, just sunk a lot of greenbacks in rebuilding it. I looked through the other forum articles but haven’t found the information that going to help me part with the huge chunk of change.

I just wanted to get some feedback/advice about an intercooler. I like the pricey V mounts would like some feedback how they perform from temperature and intercooling standpiont. Also the stock mounts from PFS, M2 and Pettit racing are appealing to me in that order. I rather not relocate the battery if possible, but think that I will be disappointed with a stock mount as they look almost as puny as the stock one. I’m looking to get around 14-15lbs. of boost after getting IC and dyno tuning. Also after adding the IC will I notice any performance change with tuning?

If you go with a stock mount the pettit IC would be choice...it's about the same cost as a FMIC and about the same size. Your IC quiz will get much simpler once you rip out those twins and opt for a single turbine. Mostly with the stock twins you are going to pay the same for everything here on out as with a single but with out all of the oppurtunities of power. 1K of boost is about what I pushed my stocks to until I found out that they were basically running a billion degrees at that pressure. So yeh you can get a lot out of the efini's but it's all subjective. Oh yeh those temps climbing, was that the oil temp or what, what temp was it? A nice radiator will be a much better purchase than a new IC, Think about it in the long run...do you want slightly cooler intake charge or a ever climbing oil temp that wears hard on your motor...

I just started researching to replace my stock IC as well, but leaning toward a SMIC for a number of reasons.

FWIW, M2 is no longer in business, but from what I gathered, M2 was just a re-badged ASP IC. Both the "standard" and "large" ASPs seem to get very good reviews and perform best. Some say the ASP large gives FMIC peformance but would require battery relocation. After that (for SMIC), SR Motorsports, Greddy, Blitz and PFS all seem to be good, but probably only for staying at stock boost levels like me.

Sorry water temp also on the radiator side, meant to say radiator and oil coolers.

here's some feedback on a Vmount,

i was driving around for about 2 hours in heavy traffic yesturday and the ambient temperature was 95 deg F. while i was stuck in traffic and moving about 5mph my water temps were 85degC and my air was between 43-47degC depending how fast i was moving. when i finally started moving over 40mph, air temps lowered to 36degC and water went down to 84degC.

i hope that info helps you out somehow

so your cooling system sees about the same temps as the unblocked radiator in the v-mount setup? do you have some kind of special ducting? or is any difference negligible between the two?

None of the guys I’ve talked to around here with FD’s and front mounts are running 85 water temps even with upgraded radiator in traffic or on the highway most are 100+ all the time. What kind of setup to you have? Do you have twins or single.

If I don’t get a V-mount upgrading the radiator and cooler will be upgraded. As for going to a single turbo setup when this becomes a pure toy I may go with a 20B swap right now it’s a daily driver. I wouldn’t be working the twins that hard very often. 10-12lbs of boost in low boost setting unless I was playing around, I like to keep my driving record in good standing, knock on wood. Besides I like having the power come on a little lower even if it sacrifices top end power.

Part of the stock cooling system that everyone neglects to modify is the fan temp setting. I set mine at 87C so when the fans kick on, my temps stay low. But yes, I do have everything properly ducted.
