Im considering selling my FD when spring comes....i freakin love this car, but its been a love/hate relationship and im considering a more reliable car. Engine and turbos have 40k on them, so its time to start considering if i want to drop $7k into a rebild/single turbo/fuel system, or sell the car and buy something else. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub..._DIR#>/sad.png Im looking in the $30k range for a replacement car, and the choices are as follows: 1) 2000 540i 6spd with DINAN upgrades 2) 2000-2001 Audi S4 3) 2001 Corvette Z06 4) 1999-2001 BMW M Coupe (stiffest chassis BMW ever made with a nice, upgradeable engine) 5) High mileage E46 M3 6) streetport/single/fuel system in FD 7) LS1/6 swap in FD Which car do you think would be closest to the FD in terms of all-out, no compromise performance? The way im looking at it, is the M Coupe and the Z06 fall into that category...but the Z is a LARGE car, and the M Coupe is just kind of...blah. Then the others fall into the sport sedan/coupe category: give up some speed, but gain a lot of reliability and practicality. I need some outside opinions on this one....post what you would purchase to replace your FD and why. You will be dissapionted if you get rid of the FD. I know mine is down right now as I am waiting on some parts to replace my turbos thanks to the precat. I miss it every day no car can make me happy but it. So I say KEEP IT!!

To answer your thread title specifically, if I were to sell my FD, I simply wouldn't/couldn't replace it. Because, to me, the only replacement is eons more expensive.
Anything else, in the range from $14k-40k, that I could spend my money on, I'd opt for an FD with the goodies given the price range. Your at 40k with turbo's and motor and already need to consider a rebuild?! Gosh, I feel for ya, what'd you do!??! :P So, really, if I sold my FD it'd be for financial reasons, and guess what I'd drive: A MKI Mr2. :P It doesn't look fast, and isn't! Just hell of a fun car to take turns in, and 35mpg to boot! Supercharged preferably, if I could find one! As for the ones you suggested as resolve: 6, 3, or 7, in that order. To me, there is nothing this side of $100k that really compares to the FD; A car that LOOKS as good as it drives, and has heritage, unique aspects, and in a lot of ways, A "Soul". The next best thing would be its equal opposite (IMO), the C5 vette. Looks similiar, still badass, too bad its super-popular and not rare at all. But in the C5 you get a torquey low-rev'ing best example of American power. Well built and carries a "soul" and heritage of it's own. Best bang for the buck too if ya ask me. And there's the idea of keeping that rare look (FD chassy) with the LS1 for that equal-opposite effect...but it's kinda a PX-7, not an Rx-7 :P I'd like to know about your problems with your current FD, perhaps your mod list too... |

Well for one, don't get the 2001 Z06....they bumped up the power in 2002...so at least get an 02 if you go that route.
If I had to replace the FD with your list....I would go Z06. If I could make my own list, I would go with the EVO, fast, handles good, practical, good MPG, just god awful ugly....but other then looks, it's the best buy for the money. Brand new, 30k, 12 sec car, warranty, etc... I hate to see how quickly people give up on their FD :( The only way I would give up mine would be for something crazy like a porsche GT2, or carrera GT. Not some ******* POS vette! vettes are for guys with small penis. then if it's yellow he has even smaller penis, if it's a yellow vert'...forget it, he has no dick.

If I were to get rid of the Fd, It would only be a for an elise. small, quick, and handles great. I would leave it stock and just enjoy driving it.

The motor/turbos are fine...gettin a little harder to crank it over in winter, but im just planning ahead so the day the thing lets go im not facing a $5k bill and im broke....or if i decide to not put any more money into it, i can get a diff car as well. |

A 94 with 108k on the chassis. I would not expect more than $13500=$14000 at best. Personaly I would not pay over 10-11k for a car with that high of milage on the chassis.
I have owned two that I had on the road. The first Fd I bought it 1999. It was a 93 base model. Had 68k on the chassis and I paid $13750 for it. It was bone stock and very clean. I bought that car from the original owner with all the service records.The second one I bought was a 93 touring. Got it for $16500 and it had 39k on the odometer when I bought it in 2000. That car was also near mint and bone stock. I bought that car from the second owner. It also came with a large folder full of the service records. Your car has been modified which drops the price and it has high milage. It's not going to bring in big bucks. You are also better off selling the mods and putting the car back to stock. You will make more money that way. |
Ive thought aboot selling too.. I don't think you can really "replace" the FD. It's seriously in a world of it's own. Sure, they can be a pain to maintain, but there's nothing like them.
That said, I've been looking into Porsches.. I really like that little Boxer or Boxter POS.. whatever.. I drove one and they aren't bad. SLOW though. If I thought I could get a 996 motor to work in one, I'd be all over it. NSX was my other option, but I'm not sure I could handle another car that people would be "OOOH, what is that?".. For now I think I'll stay FD. It's paid off and I dropped the insurance.. So I'm looking at options for it. 3 rotor is on the list (course, I haven't got a 2 rotor to work yet!).. who knows.. Every car ive compared as of yet, something is lost in the transition. A 993 Porsche would be amazing, but 13qt oil changes, leaking heads, etc. Similar maintanence nightmares if you get a bad one. haha a vespa! I was at a Pontiac dealer looking for C5's and GTOs, but they were all automatics. Those things are ugly. Look at that rear shot, looks like a swelling bruise. The front looks chopped off a Z3 yet the rear half looks like a CRX/Wagon chop. May drive/handle great and have power, but I've never liked the way it looked, ever. |

I'm sure I could think of some $80-$100K cars I would buy to replace my FD. But as as far as $30K cars, I think a Z06 would be the best on your list. Myself. I might also go with a Supra, EVO, or possibly an S2000. All three are very tunable, and look great. Those would be my choices.
