have my engine ported, a nice sized street port. I live on the east coast in mass. any recomendations for a good shop or person? thanks

Joe Flo 06-16-2003 10:21 PM

$300 is the average price if you are going to have the engine rebuilt at the same time which is recommended since you will already have the engine out.

jakew131 06-16-2003 10:24 PM

is that price with the rebuild or is the rebuild much more then that, how much would the parts cost for the rebuild?

Rebuilds depend on the place. You can buy the entire kit at atkins for around $900 and do it yourself. Or have yours rebuilt for about 2.1k or even buy a rebuilt engine for around 3.5k.

For ports you might want to add $300 to all of the ebove prices. If you know about this stuff then you can buy a template fr a couple of bucks and do that yourself. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

how hard is it to rebuild your own engine, if you buy the mazda repair manual does that make it alot easier or do you just have to do it and learn that way?

you might want to buy the Rotary Rebulid video from Atkins Rotary. Would be a good place to start.. i think its $30 and you can watch the entire rebulid process as well as use it as a guide. having the shop manual will be necessary.. but you can find that online. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

jakew131 06-16-2003 11:02 PM

i'll start looking for the manual then. and i'll pick up the video before i do anything are there any special tools needed to rebuild the motor?

yes there are special tools.. but mainly normal tools.. you'll need a torque wrench.

you can find the manual online at www.iluvmyrx7.com https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

jakew131 06-16-2003 11:04 PM

and would you guys recommend replace the apex seals at this time also. seems like a no brainer to me. do it while the engine is apart. but just checking.

jakew131 06-16-2003 11:06 PM

you will want/have to replace every seal in the engine.

You'll have to replace it all..

apex seals

side seals

corner seals.. yaddda yadda yadda... but you can reuse some, but while its apart, might as well replace EVERYTHING. Its going to cost a good amount of money... plus you will have no idea what condition your housings and rotors are in..

twinturborx7pete 06-16-2003 11:08 PM

my advice to you is... don't rebulid/port it until you blow it up..

that way you HAVE to do this..

jakew131 06-16-2003 11:09 PM

yah that true but if i do it myself i know what went into it and i'll be saving some money too

depends on where you get parts... seal kit runs 900$ and i'm pretty sure that is WITHOUT apex seals and springs. You will save money in the long run.. but i don't see it as a necessary expense.. i'd wait til it blows.. until then enjoy it how it is! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

well what color is the smoke? what does it smell like? when does the car smoke?

have you checked for exhaust bubbles in your coolant? How do you know the seals in the turbos are bad?

jakew131 06-16-2003 11:24 PM

the smoke comes from the turbos, under the hood, and a guy i work with used to work on porsches and rebuild turbos and he checked them out for me, it only smokes from the exhaust when i first start it, other then that nothing..i do smell a sweet smelling smoke from under the hood comign from dircetly above the turbos so thats how i know its coolant.

jakew131 06-16-2003 11:25 PM

jakew131 06-16-2003 11:26 PM

i was running 20w50 oil in it then i changed it to 5w 30 and now it smoke alot more, the thinner oil just goes right through the turbo seals.

sounds like you have an exhaust leak.. the smoke coming off the turbos is exhaust gas..

the coolant smell above the turbos can be a couple of different things.

#1 there are 2 rubber hoses that connect to coolant hardpipes for the turbos

#2 Copper washers which connect the hardpipe to the turbo.. those can go bad and leak.. it happened to me.

#3 I'd check your downpipe/precat gasket for leakage of exhaust.

take the cap off the coolant, start the car.. stand and watch the coolant while the car is running. When the car gets to OP TEMP the coolant should move a lil' bit from the thermostat opening up.. now if you start to see bubbles popping around in the coolant, you A) have a coolant leak outside the car and air is getting in, or B) your Coolant O-rings on your motor are allowing exhaust gasses to get into the coolant.

I'm leaning towards (A) has i have pointed out a couple things it could be.

jakew131 06-16-2003 11:31 PM

the guy at my work said there is a seal in the turbo that hold the oil in and its probably old and cracked he's pretty sure of it cause after i put thinner oil in it, the turbos smoke alot more now, how hard was it to replace the copper gaskets in the hard pipes?

twinturborx7pete 06-16-2003 11:35 PM

he's right about the oil seal.. they get hot and old.. and old dirty air intake filters make them die out quicker.

The coolant copper washers will require you to remove your twinturbos and then you can disassemble the hardpipes and replace the washers.

I can try to take a picture of my old twins by the weekend for you showing you exactly what i'm talking about if you would like?

twinturborx7pete 06-16-2003 11:36 PM

also what is your Vaccum at idle? if you have a boost gauge?

jakew131 06-16-2003 11:38 PM

yah a picture would be awesome, i get a whole range of vac. sometimes its 17-18 sometimes its 12-15

twinturborx7pete 06-16-2003 11:40 PM

your vacuum sounds good, i doubt you have any reason to rebuild your engine. Sounds like your turbos are the area of concern. Which in a good way are easier to fix and cheaper. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/happy.png

jakew131 06-16-2003 11:42 PM

i've had the car for a little more then a year now, i've been saving up for a turbo upgrade....looks like i should start saving a little more....

twinturborx7pete 06-16-2003 11:46 PM

well there are lots of options.. rx-7store.net has a lot of different upgrades you can buy as do a lot of the other shops around the internet.

I'm using a T-78 with a GT79 upgraded wheel.. yet to drive it.. still doing install, waiting on gaskets and my FMIC.. I'll have pics of it soon. But for now you can fix that washer and the coolant problem will go away. Do you still make good boost 10-8-10?

jakew131 06-16-2003 11:50 PM

yah boost is fine, no power problems just the smoke coming out from under the hood, like when i stop at a red light, the other day a cop got out of his car and ran over to my door and was like your cars on fire, i was like ehhh... no its not it just burns oil...?he was like well dont drive it anymore until you get it fixed.. i was like ok sure.

jakew131 06-16-2003 11:51 PM

the guy at my work said to get a garret turbo so i told him about the gt35/40, he was all excited about it. he wanted me to get it, i want to get it myself.. just too much $$ right now maybe in a few months
