Hey Guys, Im Lookin To Get A Rx7
#1
rx7club.com hasnt been working for me? mb its just my computer but it always seems to work off and on. anyway, so i have been looking around and ive done some research so im not a total newb, but i have a few Qs i want to ask and hopefully ill be in a nice fd soon.
i was referred to kd rotary in nazareth (not too far away) to do all the work to my car. now, for starters id like to take care of all the "reliability mods" plus a hks fmic. if those are all done will the car be 100% ok or are they still very prone to breaking? is it a bad idea to go for an rx7 with 60-80k on the original motor? ive read 93s are bad, im supposed to stay away from them, why is that? and lastly i would like to find one red or silver w/ black leather, sunroof, and 5spd... is the touring edition the one i want?
thankx a ton guys, im sorry to ask such simple questions, i feel dumb being a newb at this... on ls1 or stangnet i can educate here i have to learn

well if you include the DP,catback, intake on you list of reliability mods...which i would...and you add that IC you will also need a boost controller and ecu upgrade. you will need to tune the car...which kd can do to mixed results from what i hear around these parts. dont get anyone elses maps...you will have to tune your car to its specific needs using a dyno or datalogit and wideband.
the 93s have their issues...yes...
the touring is what i have...and i prefer it to the r1's as I like having the open roof...but i also prefer sequential to non sequential and have been called insane.
GET A COMPRESSION TEST for your motor...and inspect the turbos for leaks before you buy any car. if you find one...take it to kd and have it inspected. do not take it to a dealer to do this...i will say it again...check the compression.
good luck...yer gonna need it to find a good one...four years ago it took me a year to find mine...you might find one with a straight body and a bad motor for less money...kdr can build you a new motor and install it as well as nitpick all the problem areas for about the same cash as getting one in great shape.

nothing wrong with 93s, they were the first here, and actually i find them easier to work on. A 95 will be the best, since it was the last and doesnt' have the EGR, which is nice if you ever go single. Depends on what you wanna do to the car, how fast you want to make it, that will all decide on what car/shape you should buy.

It will be easier if you leave out the FMIC in your list of initial reliability mods for two reasons, 1) it will be cheaper because you wont have to upgrade your ecu and get the car tuned, and 2)Generally it is better to upgrade one or two things at a time to ensure that everything was installed and working properly before moving on.
Good luck with the purchase

Yeah, the other club is down for some reason... Stay here. Your q's will get answered more quickly and you won't get yelled at for not "searching". Although it IS easier to do a bit of reading BEFORE popping out questions, we're here to help... SO with that said:
Do a carfax.
Do a compression test.
Check for visible damage.
Check for leaking ANYTHING, ANYWHERE
Ask for maintenance sheets.
See if the recalls have been done (Cause there are a bunch of them)
DRIVE THE CAR. You'll know what a proper running RX7 will feel like. Plow through 1st gear. Hit second... Make sure the powerband feels strong throughout... You don't want to troubleshoot leaky boost as your first experience in a FD. Though it IS helpful to get you used to the engine bay... It's NOT FUN.
Find out when the car passed emissions last. These things SUCK ***** at emissions.
If you GET THE CAR:
Get a Downpipe. (lots cooler under the hood)
Get an aluminum AST. (The stocker is a POS)
Get a radiator. (stock has plastic endtanks)
Get an exhaust. (flows better.)
Get an ECU. (unless you are curious on how to rebuild motors)
Get a high flow cat. (Cool off that trans tunnel!!)
If you plan on staying with the twin turbo setup... I'd get a Stock Mount Intercooler. No real need for all that pluming with the stockers that are not very efficient at higher boost. But this is personal preference, I'm sure you'd be fine with a FMIC.
Have fun!
Oh and look here for commonly discussed topics!
