Hi,

I found a really clean FD, everything is perfect about it except that the 2 turbos are dead, but the price is unbeatable.

Should I buy it even though I don't know anything about rotaries? how much would it cost for 2 new turbos? would it be hard to install?

thank you!

Sorry, forgot to say that it got ~85 000 miles, so the engine will need to be rebuilt soon I guess?

turbos are easy and cheap enough to replace...

do a compression test to find out the condition of the motor...

Take the time to study up. I don't know how cheap you can get this car, but a few phone calls or internet searches should get you the info you need. What are your goals for the car? Driver? Track? You're not giving us a whole lot of info.

You say you don't know much about rotaries. How's your experience with other cars? I have better luck fitting parts on my '88 RX-7 than I do my '66 Chevy II. If you're mechanically inclined and this car is available for cheap, I'd go for it.

You can usually find decent used sets of stock turbos for $200-400. If you need to buy new, the 99 Spec turbos are around $2500:

They are a direct replacement so no other parts are needed (however I would recommend getting new oil line gaskets with the replacement).

Be VERY sure that it actually is a good deal. You get what you pay for almost all the time. Nothing speaks louder than the price. I would bet money that there is some serious **** that they aren't telling you. The turbos aren't dead for no reason, they weren't taken off the car then put in a furnace. Someone blew them to hell, in only 85000km no less. What do you think that engine has been through? That chassis? Everything else?

For reference, I know a guy selling an FD shell for as much as what that R1's owner is asking.

for $4k ... even if the engine is toast, if the body is straight... it's probably worth it. How does the interior look? Has there been any body work done to the car? Look in all the nooks and crannies where the black plastic on the exterior meet up with the paint job for overspray. (ie: under the nose, around the radiator, under the tail) If you find overspray anywhere, you know it's been repainted. Get a cheap extendable magnet from advanced auto or similar store and put a sock over the magnet and lightly drag it over the side panels on the car... if it has places where it looses a lil strenght in it's magnetic attraction to the car somewhere... there's bondo or fiberglass filler there. (it will not stick to the ***, nose or hood) For the price, i'd suspect something to be wrong, but i've gotten good deals before also. Just look it over really good. Good luck with it.
