I'm not sure what I'm getting myself into but I've always wanted this damn car! Even so that the one im buying is a 93 automatic for $13,500! The car is very clean and has 38k miles on the odemeter. Checked car fax and it says it failed emissions twice in 98 but then in 2004, moved to CA it passes smog with 37k miles, a month later sold to a 2nd owner. That is the only concerns I have with it's Carfax report and wonder why when it failed emissions it didn't display the mileage on the report but 6 years later it passes smog with an extra 12k miles (hard to believe it wasn't drove much!). All recalls have been done and the car for the past 6 months and has been wife owned. I just love how this car feels, looks and drives. Now I have a few questions and sorry if it has been asked before...

1.) Around how much is a manual transmission to be bought and swapped in a FD? Around how much would an auto transmission trade value would be?

2.) Is there any rotary shops in San Diego that can do a good vehicle inspection on FD's? Also do compression check? Mazda dealer?

3.) I heard much about the apex seals and wonder how much would it be to get those upgraded and do a street port.

4.) Since the car is pretty much stocked except for the exhaust.. I need tips on the first few upgrades to make this car reliable as it will be driven about half the week or less.

if your gonna do a manual swap i would just buy a manual fd, you would have to get a tranny $500 new clutch possibly, driveshaft, pedals, ecu, and on and on. and i think that is a little much for an auto even with low miles

I can't help you with the other questions, but IMHO, I wouldn't worry about the apex seals on such a low mileage car. Just do regular maintainance, maybe change out the transmission and differential fluid for a good synthetic. For the reliablity mods, just check the links.

BTW, I was the same way. I drove one and my eyes just glazed over. It wasn't a rational decision, but I've never been sorry. Good luck.
