the car had the original 90k mile trans on it when i got it. it came with a spare rebuilt transmission that wasn't installed yet[/quote]

the original trans had a bad 5th gear syncro but either a bearing or gear broke in the tranny. that's also in the list of stuff to do after i get the car back. have that trans rebuilt for a spare[/quote]
I have 2 broken transmissions from the 91 coupe lying around, but I think that each one has a bad 3rd gear.

i agree. somehow my GTU tranny lasted through all the abuse. even the stock clutch

nope. it whined a little but never had a problem with it. my GTU will be at the bbq with its new owner i think

I'm surprised that your transmission held out ok. How much did you sell the car for?
