the car had the original 90k mile trans on it when i got it. it came with a spare rebuilt transmission that wasn't installed yet

I guess it was a good thing you had it.
the original trans had a bad 5th gear syncro but either a bearing or gear broke in the tranny. that's also in the list of stuff to do after i get the car back. have that trans rebuilt for a spare

How come almost everybody with an RX-7 carries a tool kit in their car and has spare parts at home?

I have 2 broken transmissions from the 91 coupe lying around, but I think that each one has a bad 3rd gear.
