Hey im new on this site and to rotary engines, I was away yesterday looking at a rx-7 yesteday but was put off because when i looked down the oil filler neck it was all emulsified, but when i pulled the dipstick out it was clean oil. Coolent seemed to be clean though. The car had a compession test 2000miles ago and was reading 120psi and 110 psi, also thought it should be at 130psi. Wee bit of white smoke too out the exhaust.

Where was this and what was the ambient temp?

Usually the baby-poop brown gunk that your descirbing is just a result of not getting the motor up to operating temp, or not keeping it there long enough....like in short trips etc. Usually worse in cool weather, I'll see it in the spring and fall where I live...on the filler neck and in the cap, but not so much on the dipstick. Just condensation and pretty harmless. If your seeing a little steam out the tailpipe for a few minutes at start-up, I wouldn't worry about that either.

ALOT of steam all at once, expecially if you have a miss or stumbling idle on cold start-up could be a coolant seal failure. If your concerned about that, some other things to check would be an overflow bottle that's overfull. You can also pressure test the cooling system and/or do a test of hydrocarbons in the coolant. NAPA used to sell a kit for doing that, but I haven't checked for a long time. Like most anything else, one symptom isn't decisive, but the more symtoms you have, the more it points to a soft seal.

The compression numbers aren't that bad.

Sound like really good compression #s. I still don't know what the compression on a new 13B should be though.
